1966,and a 1962 thats almost complete
Today was a beautiful day in our area, I left home and it was 55 degrees out. I took the 62 so I could fill it up with some Ultra 94 near my shop. Well much to my surprise the floors of my office were being polished so I could not get in the building, Stopped off and got gas and ran into a fellow at the gas station having problems with a C1 replacement soft top I suggested he stop by here to get some information. i remember some one discussing this problem recently ,

Then stopped by an auto parts store and ran into a 17 year old girl who was very interested in the car. Then got to exercise the car on the highway for a little while. I get back home and my daughter needs a ride to her girlfriends house and wants to take the 66.

I get in the 66 and it fealt loose as a goose, I have not been behind the wheel of this car on the road for some time so when you not used to driving them the feel loose untill you get used to it.

I really love the pull of the 66 that L72 is a great motor it just spools up so quick. It reminds me so much of the 1969 Z28s 302 motor it just winds up fast

I really have to drive these cars more (I just renewed the collector cars policy and had to rite down the milage I went during the year and i just barely put any miles on any of the cars with the exception of the 62)often as you get to meet alot of folks that would not normally talk to you , but if your in a collector car they wont hesitate to stop and chat about a car they have , a car they had, or a car they want.

I can't wait to get mine out...of course I have to be home long enough to do that....at any rate, my classics car insurance, Haggerty does not ask year after year for the mileage in the cars......of course I hardly drive them anyways....I can't wait to get them out and get 'em going.....glad you have a smile on your face now!!!!

Hopefully we have seen our last major snow for the 05-06 season in the snowy north. We had a good rain yesterday and the road salt should be a thing of the past. Now for a nice warm day and we are off! I have been so busy working on the 63 that I haven't had a chance to check out and ready the 61 for this driving season.

I hope you had a great day Larry! The first ride of the season always has a special feeling.

Larry,
It was such a nice day Friday, that I decided to take the day off and run around in the 59. I went to get an inspection center, and the guy was so infatuated with the car, that I almost never got out of there. As the car was sitting in the drive getting inspected, It generated quite a crowd of passing motorists that had to stop in for a look. The guy even comped me the inspection!

As I drove down Congress Ave, which is the main drag through South Austin all the way to the center of town and the Capitol, the streets were filled with rods, customs, and 50's cruisers. There was a big show/run in town, and I was not even aware of it. There were hundreds of really neat cars all up and down the avenue, and I had a blast stopping to look at them, and them looking at mine!

I had drive into my office near the Capitol to sign some papers, and parked my car on the loading dock so security could keep an eye on it while I went upstairs. Unfortunately, when I came back down and started mycar, the brake booster had gone south, and the brakes were almost non-existent! unfortunately, that meant the only smart path back the the house was via the Interstate, and I did not get to look at any more cars. I spent the rest of the day pulling the booster and taking it down to Billy Dawson's shop to get him to warranty it for me, but it didn't even bother me that much after the fun I had had all morning.

I got the new booster painted and installed yesterday and am ready for some more cruising today! Oh, by the way, I had a new Mustang challenge me at a stop light near my house Friday morning, and I smoked him so bad that he probably won't show his face in my neighborhood for a long time! LOL

Regards, John McGraw

Thanks John, for bring back the 60's. What tunes did you have on?

Ray

You know John

Nothing is better then a spring Friday day off,

I have to figure away to get more traction on my 62 as it just does not dig in out of the hole. I am wondering if I should go with differant rear gears. I have 3:45'S and first and secound gear in the 700r4 seams to be too low that it cant dig in. What gears are your running in your car?

We had another member ( Brian from ct "vettes" I think) who was building a C1 with a sr111 frame under it I wonder if he is on the road yet and what his driving thoughts are with his car.

I dont want to sound boastfull but what a treat is it to drive the 62. I just have to get rid of some rattles that are anoying me. I had installed some rubber for the body mounts and I may pull them out and replace them with some aluminum spacers.

Yup road salt, I just couldnt wait any more the corners are still full of sand mix from the winter. The bikes are just coming out now also and my neighbor hood is at the entrance to a large state park that the biker love to cruise into. And for the next 3 weeks or so untill the sand mix on the roads are gone you always see a couple of bike down in courners from them not realize the dangers. Friday morning on my way to work I had to get one of my own workers off the road from dumping his bike in the corner. He got a little bit of road rash but a big hole in his calf from the rear pegs.

You just have to love the New York springs.

Well I woke up late and am off to work to catch up on some paper work so I can leave on vacation.

Speaking of bikes, our local museum had a display of antique motorcycles so I took the kids for a look around. I was a bit disappointed as I expected a larger display. I snapped a couple digital pics but I haven't downloaded yet...

Sounds great Larry! We had a good rainfall late last week and it will rain tomorrow and Tuesday. That should clear the roadsalt. The street cleaners have already sucked up the sand and grit. My target date is April 12 for the beginning of the 2006 road season.

Larry,
I also have 3.45's under my car, and I can not imagine a better gear. My 4L60E has the same gearing as your 700. It does spin the tires pretty bad through 1st and breaks them back loose on the 1-2 shift, but the car tracks so straight that I just nail it and hang on. I have the rev limit set to 5500, and just let it bang up against the limiter if necessary. Even though it spins, it still is pulling hard. Most cars I have had, once they started spining, they didn't move much until you lift your foot out of it allow it to hook up, but this car still pulls hard even when it is spinning, and it does not try and swap ends at all unless you break them loose on a curve. The suspension just works so good on this car that it is a blast to drive. It is a little choppy over the washboard stuff, but for the most part it is a smooth, fun ride. Are you sure that you still do not have a problem with your trans shifting prematurely? Are you saying that the acceleration is lacking, or that the tires just spin to much? I love the low highway RPM's these gears give, and I can't imagine that deeper gears would give much better acceleration given the amount of tire spin.

Ray,
I had a greatest hits of the 60's CD in the player, what else. The look of shock on the mustang driver's face was priceless! He grudgingly gave me a thumbs up and dissapeared down a side street.

Regards, John McGraw

Acceleration is excellent even with the tire spinning.

Just trying to figure out how to get better grip to take advantage of the HP.

I am just never happy , I wanted a car that could break the tire loose in any gear or speed, now I have it and I am looking for more traction

Linda and I got Baby out today. It was the first real drive further than a couple of mile away from the house since I pulled her into the garage Oct 31st.
After all the work I put into her over the winter i'm glad to say Baby done real good today. We drove about an hour and a half down to Baltimore so I could OJ at an NCRS event (and Linda helpd by doing most of the scoring).
It was pretty chilly this morning but by this afternoon it warmed up to about 70* which was perfect for a ride in a midyear coupe on the way home :) Baby made it down to the event and back with no problems at all I'm thilled to say and she actually ran pretty good. I think I need to just fine-tune her a little more, maybe try readjusting the mixture, but overall she ran great, idles well, and always started up INSTANTLY with a twist of the key which is MUCH better than before when she usually had to crank a bit before catching.

Man, what a sweet feeling getting to take her for a nice drive again even if it was mostly on the interstate where she not the best because of 4.11 rear gears. Got a lot of thumbs up too all day from her - even from the mustangs we passed. :D

Yep, I think that the only cure is more tire! You know, we both made the decision not to put widened quarters on, and I am not sorry I made that choice. The tire spin is bad, but I can live with it to have stock appearing body lines.

Barry,
Thumbs up from Mustangs? What a strange world we live in. The next thing you know you will get a Wave from a C6 ;) .

I agree.
We finally got some warmer weather here.
It's finally getting into the 80's.
We've been blasted with horrible sunny days of 65-75 degree weather.
It's been a horrendous winter!

I cranked up my '67 this morning and went for a drive.
It had been a whole week since I drove her.
I made sure to let my small block warm up as I didn't want to hurt my engine after the long dormant period of seven days.

Last week end was kinda chilly...it never made it past 77 degrees!

I am looking forward to warmer weather! Whew! :D

Congrats on the sucessful winters work.

That first 50 miles is the most nerve wracking as your hoping you didn't leave anything loose.

I hope you had a good day as an OJ , I learned so much from being an OJ I look forward to doing it again. I think everybody should attend some meats and see the NCRS is a lot different then what most folks lead us to believe.

I also felt good about being an OJ as I felt I was giving something back to our car hobby

Larry
yep, on the drive down we left the house at 5am and i admit to being more than a little worried to leave so early, having Linda wiht me, and not really sure how Baby was going to do on her first real shakedown drive but after getting there with no problems i didn't worry and really enjoyed the drive home :)

Being an OJ was great. I leaned a ton of stuff. I was on the team for Mechanical (engine) on the SB midyear cars so it also helped me understand more about my own car and what judges and the NCRS are looking for.
also, as we judged each stasmppad I FINALLY understand about broach marks that's i've heard and read about on here for the last two years. Once it was explained to me what to actually look for and I was looking at them I could finally understand what they are suppose to look like on a proper pad plus i got to see the differences between a proper pad and a redecked pad to see the differences in the marks. Afterwards I had 2 of the judges there look at my own car's stamppad that I bought under the impression that it was the original motor and luckily they both said the correct broach marks were there and it looked fine as a typical original pad should (thank god! ;LOL ).
I can't wait to be able to do it again sometime.

oh........ I also came home with my first NCRS ribbon - -I got one for Sportsman since I drove Baby there :)

BTW, I always knew Baby wasn't top-flight material but always hoped she would at least 2nd flight if I ever had her judged, but after seeing and learning what i did today I think i'd be lucky if Baby would 37th flight....... ;LOL

You know pedro I think I am getting a sarcastic tone here about the weather.

I will be down in clearwater in a couple of days and cant wait to feel the strong florida sun on my pale New York skin.

Hi Larry,

Yes,

I couldn't resist rubbing in the great weather we've been having! :D

It has been absolutely drop dead beautiful here in South Florida!
This is the reason why we live here.
We enjoy it now, because from June 1st to November 30th is hurricane season!

For the most part excluding early afternoon showers during the summer, we can (and do) drive our cars here all year round.

We have some good friends in Clearwater..it's a very nice place to live.

Enjoy your stay! :)

If you come further south, give a holler. I'll buy you a sody pop or beer! :beer

Best regards,
Pedro
