Hello everyone, I hope someone can help...

The car is a 77 L48, the previous owner put a Edelbrock Performer intake on it and it has the stock Q-Jet. I'm looking to change the heads, cam and maybe the carb. Should I throw out the intake manifold that I have?

My question though am I going the right way as far as power? I went to http://ryanscarpage.50megs.com/combos12.html and looked at the various packages but I'm not sure which one I should go with. Is there any setup that I can go with that incorporates the intake I already have and still give me power? Low 13s is a number that I'm looking for at the tracks.

I live in California and SMOG is an issue. Im looking for a setup that is streetable with a decent idle.

Thanks for any information you can give me. LOL. Yes I'm a newbie, still learning about V8's. I was always in love with Vettes and finally got my first one. Last car I owned, well still own, is a Acura Integra. I've been working on imports since I was 16 (Now 19).Yes I know, the R word. LOL. This is like a new world for me! HAHAHA. I had to wait for my Integra to wind up before I saw power, I guess that's what drew me to the Vette, the low-end torque. LOL. Dang, did I go off topic? HAHAHA.

A stock L-48 will usually run 14.7 - 15.20 at 88 - 92 MPH.
The link you looked at is a good guideline. I suggest spending all you money on really good heads. Your cam , intake and carb will get you 350 -400 HP with a set of AFRs (Air Flow Research ) or equal.
Rear gears and and a convertor will be mandatory for low 13's. and 105 MPH.

if your anywhere over 30,000 miles you WILL need to do your bottom end .you can do it now when you have it apart, or shortly after you start ramming 350 h.p. onto your tired rings. also the performer (not performer rpm) has little more flow than the stock intake. the rpm has a lot more flow but may not fit under the hood. mine has the weiand excellerator single plane,a little less for the first hundred feet but the gain in the top end is very noticeable.mike.

Franklin,

give these guys a look, they make great heads. http://www.airflowresearch.com/

as for your request, it will be hard to run 13 flat with an L-48 lower end, CA emmisions leagal and full weight car. it can be done, but may get a little spendy. first off, your exhaust is killing you!! need to open it up, but the smog nazi's got you by the boo-boo. the heads will greatly improve performance, but the L-48 lower end leaves the pistons too far in the hole, so your quench height is all wrong. with a free exhaust, you can do it pretty easy, but you might want to think about a 100hp shot of nitrious with the AFR heads. true duals are out of the question, so try sliding some shorty headers into a y-pipe through a dual in, dual out high flow cat and free flowing mufflers past the IM inspectors. most of the cams you looked at are pretty good. also look at the L-82 cam (same as the old LT-1 cam), it will get the numbers you want with drivability and good idle manners. what is your budget?? emissions performance building can get spendy per hp, so keep your budget in mind. Brian

Having gone that route, defenitly consider nitrous, it has no effect when off so emissions shouldnt be a problem (correct me if I am wrong), and when you use it, the performance gain is stunning.

Cheers

Richard
