Juan Pablo Montoya, driver is caught for speeding down pit road during the Allstate 400
at the Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
INDIANAPOLIS – Juan Pablo Montoya was fast Sunday.
In fact, at one point he was too fast.
Montoya led 116 of the first 124 laps in Sunday’s Allstate 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and appeared well on his way to becoming the first driver to win both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s 400-mile event at the track.
As he made his green-flag pit stop on Lap 125, however, NASCAR flagged him for speeding while entering pit road.
He was forced to do a drive-through on pit road under green as a penalty and was 12th when Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s blown engine brought out a caution on Lap 128. He finished 11th.
"It kind of sucks, but it is what it is," said a disappointed Montoya after the race. "Everybody on the (team) did an amazing job. I thought I was on the speed.
"We got lights. I was on the lights every time. I was where I was on the previous one and they say I was speeding.
"It is what it is. We had a deal like that before and once it happens, you can’t change it so it is pretty frustrating.”
One of Montoya’s team owners, Felix Sabates, who watched the race from atop Montoya’s pit box did not dispute NASCAR’s call.
