I went to order a high performance ignition coil for the 87 and the rep asked me what colors the wires were. I had no clue!
Is there a way I can find out this info without pulling the distributor cap off?
Are there any wire colors specific to an 87?

should be brown and white.

on the driver side look at the dist cap and there are 2 plugs-in's that is what he is talking about i am sure.

BTW the Accel Super Coil specifies for ALL HEI cars and trucks except the Vette. the only reason is due to the height requirement of the rubber gasket seal for the hood. use a screwdriver and run it on the back side to get it to fit right.

If you remove the coil cover on top of the distributor to expose the coil, there are 2 wires comming from the coil to the ignition "plug-in" wires. The wire colors should either be red & yellow, or red & white if I'm not mistaken.

This is what my '88 looked like.

ChickenJerk, did you notice any difference when you dropped in the new coil, I have read that a High power coil is only good for high RPM cars, these L98's are pretty low in the RPM scale.

I currently have the original coil at 130,000 miles.

I can't speak for the coil itself making a difference, because I also changed cap/rotor, Bosch platinums (single tab), and Taylor plug wires along w/ the MSD coil. All in all, I realized a noticable performance improvement in responsiveness.

I am pretty sure when I bought the accell from autozone, they had s specific coil. They carried the one that says except Corvettes, that they wanted to sell me first. I dont know the difference, but I ended up getting the one for our cars.

The coil I have on my car right now is 140005. The coil they wanted to sell me was 140002. You should be able to go with that one, our cars arent different, and I think my bro is running the 140005 in his 87.
