I am back from the Louisiana Regional meet. Got a high enough Top flight score to head for Duntov. Saw a real interesting car while there. There was a 65 fulie there which had side pipes. Of course the judges deducted points because as everyone knows there was no such thing as a 65 fulie with side pipes! Well The owner put the car on a lift and proved to all who were interested that the car was in fact an original sidepipe car. He got his points back and there is now agreement that there was such a car built!

Way to go John!

Congratulations on your achievement!

I'm envious of the fact you can drive your car. When I went shopping late this morning it was 17 degrees here with 20 to 25 mph winds out of the north and the town salt truck had just laid down a nice layer of rock salt. Spring will never get here.

Re: '65 Fuelie with side pipes

Hi John,

Hope you had a great time down there. A while back I said something on the NCRS Tech Forum about no side pipes on fuelies based on my recollections from the time. The first side pipes I ever saw were on the first 396 that the local dealer got in. I was corrected by someone and even quoted serial numbers range for the overlap. They stated that side pipes did in fact come out before the end of fuelies and before the intro of the 396.

If you do a search over there it should show up.

Congrats on the TopFlight, so how stressfull was it?

John,

Congratulations on the Top Fllight :upthumbs That's a great accomplishment on it's own but qualifying for the Duntov adds even more icing to the cake. Good luck on that as well.

Thanks Guys for the kind words! It was a truly enjoyable experience and was not at all stressfull. My first outing went real bad as my operation check was a disaster. I Top Flighted, but did not get the 97% needed to go for Duntov. The judges were great guys and were a pleasure to have judge my car, and the friends you make at the meets are worth the trip even if I did not flight. Now I have to get the car PV'ed before Hershey. Talk about your stress!

John congrats on your achivement,I will watch for the notation in my restorer mag and foward it to you for your safe keeping.

I assume the 65 did not have any doc's to prove the sidepipes and it went by the cuts in the lower fenders and the lack of threads in the cross member for the under car exchaust. What excactley made all envoulved decide it was definatley a side exchaust. And what meet where you guys at so I can watch in my restorer mag

Larry,
While I was not present except for a few minutes out of the several hour inspection of the car, Yes as I understand it, the cutouts and the lack of threads in the frame had a lot to do with it. I am no Midyear expert and will leave those decisions to those who are. This car was an incredible car and in spite of being painted the wrong color, it still Top Flighted! The owner was planning on pulling the body and returning the car to it's original black color right after the meet. It was the Louisiana Mardi Gras meet in Gonzales this last weekend.

"My first outing went real bad as my operation check was a disaster."

Haha, you just wait until you PV it if you want to talk about stressful. There are more ways for the gremlins to jump out and grab you there than you can count. I've done it twice now, once with my L88 and also with a friend's 67 435 coupe which we later got a Duntov with. (the L88 passed the PV and had 2 Top Flight's also, but never got around to doing the Duntov and now it's been so long I'd have to start all over and the paint condition is no longer up to it)

"This car was an incredible car and in spite of being painted the wrong color, it still Top Flighted! "

That's one of the things that I disagree with in the NCRS's judging format. I don't think cars that are the wrong color should Top Flight. I haven't taken a car to Bloomington since 1989, but as far as I know, they still use a "penalty box" section on the scoring sheet and there are several items that will cause a car not to get Gold, regardless of numerical score, with wrong color being one of em.
