and it's not when I grab 2nd! I"ve got this new strange chirping (only way I can describe it) sound coming from the dash that is starting to annoy me:hb !! It is intermittent and seems to occur more in the higher rpm range. It does it w/ the fan on or off and it is not engine noise. Everything is working fine and it is definitely not a rattle (cuz I have a few of those too, but I'm used to them). It sounds like the "funky" sound that you hear in some cars when the a/c is on (you know, like fan motor stuff) but it's not. Anyway, it's got me baffled:confused and I could sure use a few educated guesses on this.
Thx in advance,
Jeff

I have a similar "chirp chirp chirp" at low gear / rpm's coming from the passanger airbag area. I can reproduce the noise by reving the engine slow speed. And the chirping will go away when I press my finger on the airbag... When the engine gets to high rpm the noise also goes away.

I have to either drive the car always at high rpm's or keep mt finger pressed on the airbag, huh??? ;LOL

I love these cars but it seems like every time I tackle one annoying sound a new one pops up! Or maybe as I eliminate one sound now I can hear another. I guess if I just keep up this plan of attack eventually I'll run out of....noises. Yeah Right

It may be a Corvette, but it's still a Chevy! :L

Is it one interior material just rubbing on another? Could a cleaner/dressing eliminate the offending panel(s).

Ya know, an open exhaust could mask the noise; even the noise from Lisa, who might object to the roar! :D

Whatever the sound may be, I can tell it is mechanical/electrical.
As far as the exhaust, as it is, if it were any louder I'd be sleeping in the garage w/ the car;LOL

I have the chirping sound coming from the passenger dash area too... I have never been able to figure out what the heck it is. My 'fix' is to turn the radio up!

Ya know, what bothers me more than the "chirp" was the "cackle" out of "LSA" when she heard the sound. "What's that noise?" "Now what's wrong w/ the car?" AARRGGHHH
Just kidding Honey!

It's the clutch...

Well I've pinpointed the "chirping" and it's the clutch. If I lean my foot on it just a little (which I don't want to do on a regular basis) it stops. Like I said originally, it starts making noise as the rpms raise above 2500 and it's intermittent. Just had the whole clutch hydraulic system (not the clutch itself...which feels good....no slipping at all) replaced but the noise started up before that was done and hasn't gone away. Could it be something as simple as loose components in the pedal because it definitely is coming from that area and not the clutch itself? Once again, any educated guesses would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't sound like anything "major" but it is annoying... kinda like the faint sound of lifters tapping (which it is not! thank God!)
Thx,
Jeff

Hey, my Vette never has a headache! Has been one a few times, tho.

Is the chirp from the pedal pivot or the cruise control disconnect switch?

No nests up there, I assume.

Man I wish I knew cuz I can even hear it w/ the windows down kinda like it's coming from outside the car. Like I said, If a lean my foot on the pedal just a tad it's gone. I'm getting the feeling:cry that it is interenal (clutch). @#$! I don't know but I'd love to think that I could just adjust the play out of the pedal and...problem solved. Any thoughts?

And NO...Definitely no nests up there:L !!

Chirp

I hate to say it but if you rest your foot on the clutch pedal and it goes away it could possibly be a throwout bearing wanting to be replaced. Do a whole new clutch if that's the case. You don't want to have to go in there twice. As for the chirping, if you can live with it it will let you know when it's really time for a replacement. I'm doing a clutch on my C4 now. Not a big deal but I think they built the car around it!!! It's close quartered in there that's for sure. Good luck. Keep the tunes UP!

Thx for the reply...

For now, I may just have to live w/ it (xmas=$$$$) although I imagine I'll be tearing into it pretty soon cuz this clutch has never been right since I bought the car. The noise is getting progressively worse and, even though the clutch does not slip at all (and believe me I've tested it:D), there obviously is something wrong because that much "chatter" upon takeoff just can't be right.
AND...it's a daily driver.....traffic etc...

There is no adjustment in a hydraulically actuated clutch.

'Riding' the clutch will accelerate wear on the clutch parts; the throwout bearing and the fork, at least.

Similarly, holding pressure on the shift lever puts pressure on the shifting forks in the tranny, increasing the wear rate on the forks and the synchros.

Chirp

You are definatly correct! What's your point though? ;shrug

Resting a foot on a clutch pedal, not riding it will make the t. o. bearing contact the pressure plate just enough to make it spin. If it's worn that's where the noise comes from. Putting just a little pressure on it will usually quiet it or in other cases make a noise worse with more or less pressure. Also the damper springs that are in the clutch disc can and do become loose and will rattle. I have a disc on the floor now from my car with 4 loose springs. One I can almost push out of the disc with my thumb.

JEFNLSA, one thing is for sure though...with all of us where we are and you where you are we internet mechanics:crazy will never fix it for you. I'm sure you will find the problem and the fix on your own. That's usually how it works for me. Like the man said it might be something loose in the pedal.
Good hunting!
Joe
