What the frig is up with GM discontinuing so many parts for my Vette?I thought that they had to make parts for 10 years after production ceased, but we're having problems getting parts for 1995 models.
I personally have a '90 that I can't get new parts for,but my buddies '95 has discontinued parts as well.

What *is*the rule on availability of parts?

I have heard "stories" about the dealer trying to get parts for cars still under warranty and the part has been discontinued :crazy

tom...

Should be 7-10 years at least!

I was told that it should be 7-10 years or else you can make your own with a GM playdoh set. Wasn't that part of the original building process?

:)

Rule is seven years from when the part was last used (so 95-specific parts are out of luck, but anything that was used until 96 must still be in production... until next year). My dad hit this issue with his 77 Rabbit Diesel... had a number of unique pieces.

Ya know it seems like there would be some New Old Stock around for a while.

There usually is... and I thought the dealer could find it. Some oddball items for sale on another forum were located at a GM *truck* service center, of all places, but they were in the computer...

Heard that and had visions off pulling the guy over the counter by his collar....But its not his fault Id only be beating the messenger!!

:L :L :L :L :L

Messenger beating can ease the anxiety of frustration.
:bash

Try it,you'll feel good about it.And doggone it,people will learn from your example and possibly use what they've seen to shape and mold their own lives into an object closely resembling either Mr.Peabody,Felix the Cat or The Great Gazoo.

Oops,gotta go.My medicine is here.

:w

Molding the characters?

Sounds like a perfect candidate for a tube of playdoh my friend.
Repeat after me, I am calm, I am a good person. I do like to kill the messenger! DOH! :)

This gives you a good idea of GM's respect (or lack there of) for their customers doesn't it?

If they wanted to take care of their customers and promote good will, they would have a mechanism in place like Mercedes Benz who can help you find parts for 50 year old cars. Now THAT's customer respect.

I think GM figures that this is just more encouragement for buying a new car. I wonder if they have considered the possibility of the frustrated parts seeker buying a competing brand?

My $0.02,

Larry, consider the sheer volume of cars that GM has sold over the years compared to Mercedes, as well as the average price of the car and how many are still on the road. I'd say there are a LOT more early (for example) 190D's still around than '77 Vegas or Citations. Also, sadly, America's attitude is usually 'broke? Cool! Excuse to get a new one!' while Europe prefers the "it's 26 years old; should be good for another 20-25". Recall the thread here with the Brit who said most people just rebuild their old parts (wheel bearings, etc) instead of replacing. GM's doing what is economically feasible based on its primary (NOT Vette owners!) customer base.

Now, that said, I feel that GM should be doing more to help owners of its flagship model...

What parts are you having a hard time finding? I am amazed by how many parts you can buy from the aftermaket suppliers (midamerica, eklers) or even the junkyards. I believe that GM will purge some of its surplus of parts based on the age just to make room for the newer cars. I agree with rrubels assessment on parts. BTW, when GM purges it supplies I believe they sell pallets of parts to the highest bidder, who turns around sells it on e-bay (what a racket)!!!:duh

Doesnt it really tick u off!!

I've had dealers tell me that the part isnt available at all........until I found a great parts guy who went out of his way to find parts "lost" in GM system. I dont have his # right now but his name is Don Butz at The Brown-Daub Chevy Parts Warehouse in Nazareth, PA. He may just be able to find it 4 u!
