This was one of those back burner projects which finally got done. My thanks to Tuan Phan (ncfierydragon) on the other forum for creating the inspiration. Here's his thread:

The basic ingredient is a $15 heavy duty telescoping clothes bar.

Discussion:

1. The clothes bar has fairly substantial hanger "clips", through which the seat belt attaching bolts are inserted and refastened. You need a T45 Torx socket for this job.

2. The support bracket is laminated from 1/2 inch plywood and connected to the bar with 1 1/8 inch C clamps. Note the two camera stations.

3. The tripod pan head is mounted to the support bracket with a standard 1/4 20 hex bolt. You can use a variety of mounts for the cameras e.g. pan head, ball head, simple 1/4 inch bolt, etc.

4. The vertical support backet is fastened to the main support bracket with a 1/4 20 hex bolt. The bottom of the vertical bracket or "foot" is fastened to the carpet with velcro. This bracket prevents the bar from rotating and generally provides stiffening to the whole rig.

5. The camera LCD screens can be seen in you rear view mirror while driving, and so you can visually confirm the camera operation (start/stop, zoom in/out). With the video camera, I use the wireless remote. For the still camera, I have to press the shutter manually. I plan to get a remote control cable for the still camera.

6. Since I leave the video camera screen on all the time, I have a small inverter to keep the video camera battery charged. This is hung with velcro on the carpet behind the passenger seat, and is powered by the console plug.

7. The rig works very well, even on fairly rough roads. Should be just fine for the track. Best of all, the project is under $20.

Enjoy

Jacob, that is awesome! Very well documented.. :beer
Have you put it to use yet?
And what kind of camera is that in the front- is it digital or some kind of medium-format SLR?

Did one video session over the weekend. The car sounds great when the video is shot facing the rear.

The front camera is a Nikon CP5700 digicam.

Camera mount on a shark

Years ago I did a night time exposure with a Nikon F-3 w/ a 28 mm wide angle lense mounted on top of the T-Bar of my '78 Vette. The curve of the fenders with the headlights up looked pretty cool against the rain soaked streets of downtown Houston streaking by. You don't have to drive very fast to get some pretty cool effects. I am going to try mounting my video cam on a bar like you did. Great Idea!
