Dear Mark,

I know how much fun you're having with your project. Here's some additional information that my keen psychic powers have told me you need.

Distance from L-88 air cleaner drop base surface to stinger under-hood - 4.0"

Induction-06-700.jpg

In that distance will be the crushed foam (seen around the base in this photo), the fiberglass piece bonded to the hood, and the screen and element inside the hood.

That what you need, my friend? :D

P.S. 4" leaves no room for engine rock. Use less than the 4.

Bob, Thankyou very much for the pic and reply..... But........................................

Here's the deal.. I do not have a Stinger Hood.. I have the older Blister BB 65-66 hood with the grills on each side. I think the Air cleaner you have will work on my car and the reason I am asking you to check is because you have the same carb and motor as I .

What I need to Know is how high is it from the drop base flange or the surface that sits on the carb flange to the top of a 3 inch air cleaner element.

I know your element is built into the hood. If you could find an old 3" high 14" diameter air filter and remove the foam base on you air cleaner base and place the 3 " high element on the base then measure the hight from inside the base flange contact area to the top of the air cleaner element and tell me how high is that would answer my question.

Paul did a check for me on his... this is where I need the measurment.

This is the base I am considering..I need to know if will work based on the measurment above. And where did you buy that air cleaner base and is it simalure to the one in this link.

I want to buy the same one you did to be sure I get the correct fit.. That's why.... YOU ARE THE KEY...

Thanks again and I hope I'm not being an American pain in A_s

I and others provided some info in the "other place" as well.

Thanks Paul...Your the Best.. I checked it out...:beer

Mark,

I don't have any old air cleaners around here. How about I measure the difference between the drop base flange or the surface that sits on the carb flange to the surface where my foam seal rests........in other words, to the bottom of the L-88 base?

You could then calculate up from there, no?

:crazy :crazy :crazy

Ok I'll put it in my words ... Remove the foam on the base of your cleaner .If you have something that is 3 " tall...set it on the lowest surface of the base. Where the air filter would rest.

Then ..from the top of the 3" What ever... Measure how High it is over the ..

Carb Flange....( Carb Flange...The spot on the carb where the base sets)

It should be about 1 1/8" abovre the carb flange. Like the pic of Paul 79's Pic with the tape measure.

Thank You Kind Sir...... You know... this project might cause me to go back to those $5.00 Crack Hookers..........

Okay, so after throwing a 5 lb. steak out the window to distract the pitbulls (man they're mean at night), I ran to the garage entrance, desperately trying to pay off the hobos sleeping in front of the door, unlock all the padlocks and disable the alarms and sirens before the dogs ran out of food and turned on me.

Once inside, I realized that I was safe for the moment..........but out of steak. How to get back to the house with my answer? Suffice it to say that I bribed one of the drunks to let the dogs gnaw on his leg while I made my escape.

So..............here's your damn answer :bash

13/16", not 1 1/8". Or, to put it another way........the flange (carb top) is 2 3/16" above the base (foam base).

Where did I get the L-88 unit? From my friendly neighbourhood Chevy dealer in 1968/69, that's where.

Damn. I forgot to set the alarms. Five more pounds of meat. :w

If you want me back out there tonight, you better FedEx more meat. :gap

;LOL ;LOL ;LOL

Dam.... That was a good one..... Did you use a 3" piece of steak or a 3" piec of leg meat from the Hobo on the air cleaner..??:L

Ok ..That settles it... I'll buy the L88 base and all should be well In the Secrete World of The Under Hood Air Cleaner...Now all I have to do is find a super flat top for the air cleaner......A Meteal One...If not Paul79 will be Pi_sed...

Thanks Bob for all your help.. :beer

Mark, I believe the ealy tops used on the Carters like '63 and '64 are flatter than the latter style.

Tom M

Those tops are flatter but they are also a larger diameter (almost 1"). I tried that on mine and it didn't look good at all. The airfilter was enclosed inside the 63-65 (dual snorkle or SHP) base instead of being an open element.

just cut a hole in the hood like if you had a blower installed, than you won't have to worry about clearance issues!

I know, I know, you liked me better with my cast on.........

Jeez... I didn't dare go there....not that it didn't cross my mind.....;)

Get a piece of aluminum flat stock cut it to the size you need, drill a hole in the center and either polish it up real purdy or use tootsie rolls in a drill press to give a machine turn effect.

VNV,
I was just on a fishing expedition for you. You have to examine the catch. Sorry to be so blunt!
