I cannot adjust either of my outside mirrors. I have power to the switch (12V on blue wire). Before I shell out my hard earned cash (on a fixed income) for a new switch can anyone tell me how I can verify the actual motors for each mirror is operational? Tnx

If both sides are out, check fuses first. this is most likely the problem.

inop side mirrors

sorry I should have said that, I pulled the designated fuse and swapped it with another as well as did a continuity check on it...it was okay. I also mentioned that I had 12V on the blue wire indicating it was getting power (at least to that point).

I looked at my Haynes and Chiltons Manuals for any info on the side mirrors but they are absolutely worthless. As far as I am concerned they can be used for dust collectors in my bookcase.

Open to all suggestions short of stick of dynomite.

Let me start over

I went back, pulled switch and I have power to Red Wire. I initially said Blue as that is how I feel.
While monitoring the 12V on the Red Wire, I pulled the appropiate fuse and the 12V disapeared.
This gives a good indication that the switch may be faulty, as it is highly unlikely that both mirror motors would be bad, then again.....anything is possible.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to be certian that it is the switch not the mirror motors.

As I said before I looked at my Chiltons and Haynes Manuals and I might as well have read the Victorias Secret Catalog I would have gotten more out of it.

So HELP !!!! Tnx, Sam

You know you could/should check the switches, (as you asked) by checking each side of the switch with a vom (volt ohm meter). For often in the humid climate of the southeastern states, corrosion forms on the contact points of the switches.

Another thing to check, is your earth / ground. Make certain you have a good one or you can put all the electricity to the motor, and since there is neither ground nor completed circuit, the motors will not run for love nor money.

I like to work on the KISS (Keep It Simple Sailor) principle. That's the easiest way to start.

If you have no earth/ground, check and clean all your connections. later look to replacing things which may not work perfectly well.

ahhhhhhhhhh, easier said than done, it is not a simple SPST switch (Single Pole Single Throw) but has (if memory serves me correctly) 8 contacts.

assuming thats one hot lead (12V), one ground and 6 others to chose from. I am assuming they control the up-dn, lt-rt but which does which, that is the $64,000 question.

any one out there with a wiring diagram care to offer guidance?

and I did pop the switch apart and all seems kosher considering I don't know what it's supposed to look like inside.

keep the suggestions coming..........

I've got wiring diagrams for my '89 but doubt seriously that it's the same as yours. I have a seperate mirror select switch that is not on the big mod switch. It might be that switch is bad and not the 8 connector one. That switch might not be letting the voltage get to the motors.

Do you have a seperate 12v power supply you could put right on each motor or hell, even use the battery on the car with long wires. Just to see if the motors work. Tracing down electrical problems in these cars is a nightmare sometime. It's probably as simple as a wire loose.

Yes, this is a single multi-purpose switch which both selects which mirror (by turning left or right from center) and direction which you want mirror to move (by pushing lever in appropiate direction.

One thing I haven't done as yet is look directly at the motor. I am trying to keep from having to remove door panel if at all possible.

I may pull the switch tomorrow and play with it till I figure what puts power where. That'll be fun!

Just a thought, you might try touching the red wire that you said you have 12 V at to the other wires (just brush them together for a split second) and see if the mirrors move. If so it is probably the switch.
