1982 Black Fastback
Hey everyone,

I was looking around in several different sources, and I noticed that black is not listed as an interior color choice.

I'm a little confused, because my VIN (among other things) tells me my car is a 1982 and my eyes tell me the interior is black.

I suppose it is possible that a PO did a complete interior replacement, but I find that hard to believe.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Black is not an interior color for any 1982 Corvette. According to the Corvette Black Book page 85.
colors available are, Cloth -Charcoal,Camel, Dark Blue, DarkRed; Leather-Silver beige, Silver Green, Silver Gray. Silver beige only for the anniversay edition.

It would seem that an interior color change has been done somewhere in your Corvette's history. Could it have been a special order? ;shrug

Here's a link to the 1982 Production and Performance webpage from the CAC Tech Center - Model Center: Click

As John says, check the "Trim Tag" ;) it's a small aluminum tag riveted to the door frame on the drivers side. Open the door and look next to the dash on the door frame, just below the windshield (on the door frame of the car, not the door itself) you'll see a small approx. 3"x2" aluminum tag with the color codes for your 1982.

OR

Since your car is a 1982 you can get a copy of the build/window sticker from the NCM and find out all your RPO's ;) I have no idea what they charge now days for this "service"..

Hey everyone,

I can't tell you for sure what the trim tag says. It is there, but it has seen some abuse and is hard to read. I'll try again later today.

I know that some interior work has been done, because the seats have been re-upholstered with black suede. That sounds goofy, but it really nice to sit in. But everything is black: carpet, t-top liners, compartment doors, glove box, sun-visors, rear privacy screen, even the plastic screw caps.

The only reason that i doubt the PO did all of this is because i've seen the PO's handiwork in the engine bay and there is NO way had the patience to re-do the interior this well. He would have been sitting on a milk-crate.

I'll check the trim code and see about getting a copy of the build sheet.
When I find the answer to this mystery I'll let you know.

Thanks for your help!

What color are your seatbelts....that could be a give away on what color the interior originally was. At the time of the install no aftermarket belts were available. And they are so expensive that most people wouldn't mess with them if they are close. I'm betting they are charcoal gray.

You could flip your kickpanels around and se what color they are too....most people don't do the backside when they re-spray them.

My 82 was a black w/charcoal interior originally.....now it's red with black interior :cool

I'm not so-sure that is exactly-correct, as I have seen an '82 with Dark Blue leather, and I own an '82 with Dark Red leather.

I know that some interior work has been done, because the seats have been re-upholstered with black suede.

The only material offered for seats in 1982 was cloth or leather, suede was definitely not an option.

Perhaps your previous owner considered himself a mechanic but realized his limitations for interior work and farmed out that project. Or it's possible your car had at least two previous owners, one was very good at interior work and the other bubba'd your engine bay.

My 82 has the original interior and it is charcoal. Next to a 1981 with Black, it is identical. The carpet on the doors is a little lighter, but I think that is from fading. I jsut bought black seats, a black dash, and black carpet to replace the original stuff.

The seatbelts are black.

My 81 trimtag says she had a silver interior and when i bought it she had a compleet black interior incl. carpet and seatbelts. And the interior isn't that hard to change only expensive :D

Glensgages,

Yes there are other colors, according to the black book but no codes for them. Dark blue leather 2,750, and 4,444 red leather plus a few others. So you are correct in what you have seen.

PS nice legs !!!
