Intermittent TPMS Sensor

I have read all of the posts about TPMS sensors and battery failures. I would suspect that a battery failure would not be an intermittent problem.

All of my sensors work well except for the right front. The right front sensor will sometimes not read, will sometimes delay then read, will sometimes read like the others and will sometimes, when driven over a long stretch will read "RXXX".

Any suggestions other than replacing?

If its the original TPMS that was on the car you are at the ten year mark which is just about the life of the battery. I think most are lasting about 8-10 years.

If you are getting a XXXX reading for the right front TPS, then the battery is not sending and you need to replace the unit. The battery is not changeable even tho some people have been able to remove the stem (antenna for the TPS) and put a new battery in. The battery life, according to GM, is between 7 to 10 years. This is not an absolute as the battery life also depends on the miles driven. If you drive about 12 to 15 K/year or more, it is not surprising that the battery is dead (or almost dead) as the battery is sending information to the DIC whenever the car is in motion. An intermittent signal or a false reading could be due to the little ball in the valve stem being stuck, therefore an incorrect or no signal would be registered on the DIC. If you don't have many miles on the car, then the battery could be dead also just from dissapating it's charge over the years.

Thanks for the input. 10 year old car, 80k miles. I am not surprised that it would be a battery based on the age, but in my simple mind a battery is either dead or it isn't. I guess it's possible that it has just enough charge left in it to cause the sensor to work intermittenly.
