i have put a new tran pan on my 1986 vette with a 700r4 with a new filter. i got the car with 85K and have no idea when or if it was ever changed before? smell is o.k. just looks a little weak. so i did all this and put mercon-III back in it. but i say some mercon five in the stores and was wondering if any one knows how it will do in our older 700r4??

I would stick with the Dexron 3. Ford forums say Mercon 5 is not backward compatible. I don't know if they mean with the older Mercon or not.

yeah your right, i put a new pan on with a drain nut so i plan on change it again soon to get more old stuff out and new in. not power flush here!

Just did my trans filter last night. I didn't put that drain nut in like I was suppose to ... my fault ... Next year! I have a small refrigeration hand pump I use from the fill hole ... it pulls it out nice right from the bottom of the pan. No power flush here either!

with most of the ATF in the torque converter, i felt the pan with drain plug would ease changing out more ATF now. i but after more miles are put on i will still have to drain the pan for the another filter change. it took almost 5 quarts with the pan and filter change so i am thinking 4.5 quarts with just dropping the plugs this time.
