I got an estimate to repaint my '79 for $3362.

It is a Dupont paint that comes with an 11 year warranty, 8 of which are 100% coverage for materials & labor.

The bumpers will be removed and painted separately and things like mirrors, emblems, etc will be removed too.

What do you all think about this price?

Adam,

I've priced a paint job for my '81. I plan to do most the prep work and priced different paints, everything from Laq to Sickens (sp) and around $4,500 is the price range I received.

Most reputable shops I quoted from prefer to do the finish prep work themselves. I had one quote for everything that was $5,600 which is very tempting, but he wants the car for minimum of 6 months and work on it as time permits.

So I would think $3,362 is pretty reasonable. Does this shop have prior Corvette body/paint work exprience? and have you seen any of their work. I went locally to three guys that do HotRod body and paint then one from back home in Nebraska. (All have done Corvettes)

That price sound good; but what all is included. The vette shops around here are asking for $4000- $8000 for a paint job and you have to get on the list to get it done. I'm doing all the prep work myself and have found a guy that does street rods in his spare time. I've seen his work and talked to a lot of people about him. Everyone said he does a great job. It should save me a bit of money this way. I have worked as a body man in the past and have painted a lot of car, but I just don't have the kind of shop needed to do this type of job. I'm doing all the work getting it ready and have to do all the sanding and masking and it is still going to cost me around a $1000. Figure it out and check there work history. If it's good go for it.

Id be very careful about this shop who quoted you that price ; that is very low for including prep work too. Trouble is, you dont find out how good thier work was till about 2 years down the road when/if cracks start appearing again, discoloration, etc... You will want to get many references from them 'on fiberglass cars' before you sign up with them.

In Illinois, prices range from $5000-7000 by shops who so ALOT of Corvettes.

I got the front half of my Vette repainted for $1500 by a retired GM bodyman , but 1.5 years later...im getting cracks in the same places again on the front fenders. Was it worth it ??? I guess it will get me by for a while, but in a few more years im going to need an entire paint job done RIGHT.

The guys I use for major shoots or when I dont have time quoted 4k. (Rare81 its sikkens ;) ) thats all my guy shoots, he will do 100% custom color and even give your the recipe for it incase you need a touchup. He guarentees his work for 5 years.

I've seen his shoots and they are nothing but high quality, his shop is clean, and the paint booth is spotless.

Thats not a bad price for a "driver "quality paint job.Its all in what your looking for in an end product and how long you want it to last.Im not trying to sound like a know it all but Ive been doing this for a long time and most shops that do collision work are the ones to stay away from .Most of the time c3s need to be stripped because everyone avoids that part of the job over the years. To do it right the car needs to be dissassembled .
When I do a car I have a few must dos that must be done or it must leave the shop.Everything gets dissassembled, door hinges get rebuilt, all weatherstripping gets replaced and all emblems chrome and light lenses get replaced. This sounds pricey but its the only way to get a top notch job.A job like that usually runs anywhere from 5-8k depending on who buys the parts and if the owner wants to do any of it.Again thats not a bad price for a typical collision shop ,driver quality paint job.Heres another thread that came up last week that you might find interesting to read. http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30990
