well I finally started my vette up today with its new engine :).I have a question though allthough I tried to set the timming at 8 deg BTDC it would idle rough and stall. When it was set at 14 deg it runs much better. Will this hurt anything? BTW the combo is a 10.1 .040 over 350 small chamber big valve heads with a .488 lift cam with 292 adv duration at .050 lift how much timming can be dialed in safely before i get into trouble?

congrats! Always nice to fire up a new motor.. I run my timing at 14, but my cam is a little smaller. You really only need to be concerned about preignition, mostly at part throttle aceleration, but can also occur at WOT on the top. I wouldn't go over 34 total advance (mechanical plus static) until you drive it a bit and check the plugs with a magnifying glass for black and silver specks of piston aluminum. I had to run mine at 16 before I got the idle mixture tuned correctly and with that it pinged bad at part throttle. Happy tuning.
