This is my first time on this web page so please bare with me.
I have a 1986 Corvete and the problem I am having is the ignition switch sticks. I can't get the key out nor will it let me turn it to start the car. If I wiggle it around for two or three minutes, it might turn on and I can start the car. But when I turn it off the key seems to be stuck. It won't turn forwards or backwards. I get lucky sometimes and it turns off and on like it is supposed to.
Please Help. I am wondering how to get the key out or to remove and replace the switch on the steering column.
Thanks,
Jim

If you have an auto trans, the key removal is linked to the trans selector positioned in Park. It you play with the selector does that help. I'm thinking pressing the selector hard forward into the park position (even giving it a good bash forward), or conversely pulling back a little toward the N position. You could also remove the console top and cover for the shifter lever, and remove the park neutral switch. There's a connection in there that goes into the base of the steering column and interlocks the ignition and key.
I also recommend getting a Factory Service Manual from Helms, inc for you year car. Invaluable information there. Mine occasionely is reluctant to release the key, and now won't start in Park, I must select N to start.

Oh - If you have a manual, others will need to chime in with help.

GRAPHITE

JIM A temporary aid or possible solution is to go to a auto supply and buy some GRAPHITE in a tube.
IT REALLY DOES MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN HOW THE TUMBLERS IN YOUR SWITCH WORK.
SPRAY IT INTO THE SWITCH. GOOD LUCK:upthumbs
