Just registered & this is all new to me. My wife & I just Friday picked up our 1st Corvette! We're pretty excited & want to do the right things. It's a matching #s 1971 frame-on restored Mulsanne blue white top convertible, L48 4 spd, 71000 original miles. Everything appears to be stock.

A question for you veteran owners. The motor has just been rebuilt with a 100 or so miles on it. Any recommendations for breaking it in? Oil change intervals? Considering switching to synthetic Mobil 1 after break-in. Is this a good idea? Any other suggestions for a newbe?

Thanks guys.

Welcome to CAC I use Mobil 1 in all my good cars, well worth it. I ran dyno oill for 500 then changed to Mobil 1 oil and filter.Get it broke in quick and join us at

Hey thanks. Had a couple people tell me they wouldn't run synthetic in older motors. What weight Mobil 1 & change interval do you use?

I switched to synthetic and all it did to me was stop the jingle in my pockets and give me leaks in my engine. I'm definitely going back to mineral. :(

I run mine hard and have a HVHP pump so I run 15w-50, I do have leaks but hopefully a new pan gasket will cure it. I forget what the milage was but I usually change it in the spring since I usually don hit the recommended milage in a years time. I think most of the problem is using synthetic in an older motor that has not been rebuilt, mine has had a nagging leak since day one but from this forum I found out it is common with aftermarket pans and timing covers to leak and a onepiece pan gasket should fix it. so next oil change I do it like a trans;LOL

Just wanted to say welcome Giz! :w

And since you asked... stick with the old fashioned oil and change it every 3k or 3 months. I have a new crate motor and push the car hard... no problems.

Someone else's turn...

Later... Brian

Thanks fellas. My only experience with synthetics has been with my motorcycle. I've got a 1700 Roadstar, about 80hp. After switching to Mobil 1 20/50w it ran smoother & quieter, & a lot of owners report over 100,000 miles with no engine wear.
