Since my last post I leaned out my carb enough that im not seeing any black smoke upon acceleration like I had before. I took Friday off to put on new valve covers and wires. I have older Eldebrock heads on it and since I have new seals on hand might just change them while im in there. Two questions:

1. Do I pull one plug out at a time... or pull all of them?

2. My compressor comes on at about 60 lbs and shuts off at about 120lbs. How much are is needed to keep the valves up?

Thanks

Sorry I missed your post yesterday Joe.
1) I think it would be faster changing the air plug with all the plugs out and easier to bump the engine to the TDC position on each cylinder.

2) At 60 PSI and a 1.94 dia, intake valve you will be exerting around 175 pounds of pressure on the valve face and lower than that on the exhaust valves. So if you don't exceed that pressing down on the retainers taking the keepers off, you won't break the air pressure seal on the valve and drop it, should be OK. I helped a guy do it once and he just popped the retainer with a large socket and the retainers just popped out. Make sure you plug your oil galley holes to keep from losing them.

Hope you enjoyed the nice weather working on your Vette.

Hey Pete,

Just finished but thanks anyway. My back is killing me but it was not as bad as I thought. Seals were not that bad although a couple of them were mushroomed out at the bottom. Started it up and they were all clacking at me so I adjusted one at a time until it was nice and quiet. Timing was just where it was when I started. Saturday im putting new Eldebrock valve covers on along with wires and detailing the engine bay for spring. Time for Barrett Jackson and a cocktial! Thanks again

My wife just caught me in the garage...told me I cared more about the car....first time she has said that since last summer... I love this warm weather in January...lol bottoms up

Yeah, It's been great. I split a 1/2 face cord of wood this afternoon in just a sweatshirt. When is payback time?

February....im sure. Two more years and we are south-bound......im counting the months down....

Interesting that you should be doing the valve seals now.
I got to thinking about Ollie Hellert, the guy that showed me how to do them, and after a little research it seems that he has had quite a career in drag racing. Ollie just opened a new shop in Van Nuys, CA this year.

Ollie has worked for Airflow research and crewed for Kenny Bernstien and Shirley Muldowney, to name a few.
So for the West Coasters, there's a new shop in town.
