Keyless entry for an '84

I found in a MidAmerica or Corvette Central catalog a keyless entry system that was plug-n-play for the 84 Corvette. I didn't buy it at the time as I couldn't afford the extra cash. Now I'm trying to find something like that again, but they don't carry the item any more.

Does anyone know if there is a keyless entry system for an 84 corvette that is plug-n-play? I would really like to elminate using the key to get my door unlocked. I guess I'm spoiled by the keyless on our truck and other car.

Thanks for the suggestions.
John

You might check into the inexpensive alarm and/or remote start systems, they generally integrate with the power door locks.
I put a Code Alarm unit on my 89, and it has full remote controls including remote start.

As Tony said...you need an aftermarket alarm for an 84...with mine I also got the door to remote, but I also have the windows operate with the remote.

The one problem I have is trying to figure out which wires under the dash I'm supposed to work with. I have a wireing guide, but even a simple red wire can be complicated because of the multiple wires that are red. Plus I want to make sure it doesn't cause a problem with the installed alarm that comes on the Corvette.

I've done lots of wiring for stereos, electronics, home wiring, even car repair, but I'm not 100% confident trying to figure out which wires go to the doors, hatch and alarm.

Does anyone know of an inexpensive aftermarket alarm that was easy to put on their 84?

Thanks,
John

John ...do you have these schematics?

Use these...colors are the key...to see if it is the actual wire you need, you need to probe it with your multimeter. As for an inexpensive aftermarket alarm I would advise against it...you get what you pay for. If you need anymore help probing the wires just give a yell her and I will try to explain.

I do have the shop and electrical manual that goes has those diagrams in it. The problem I run into is being able to tell which wire, under the dash, is going to be the one to connect to. I seem to recall the last time I purchased a remote keyless entry system that it told me to find the green wire (we'll say). But under there I found multiple green wires so how do I determine which one of those green wires is the one I need?

Also, how will a remote keyless entry system work with my factory installed alarm system? It shuts down the ignition system when the alarm goes off and if you lock the door and then unlock the door and close it, then reach through the open window and use the unlock button, the alarm will go off. How will unlocking the door with the keyless remote disable the factory installed alarm to keep it from going off? That's another issue I'm unsure of.

Any other suggestions or things I should consider as I contemplate this? Is it worth having circuit city or another place install the alarm or are those kids going to just slap it on there and forget about everything else?

Thanks again.

Lets say you are looking for the green wire...Look close, and make sure its a plain green wire you are looking for. It could be a lime green wire, a green wire with a black or white stripe on it...so this narrows it down alot. Now when you see a wire that could be the wire you are looking for, probe the wire with the red end of your multimeter (and with the black end to ground). set the meter to 20 volt (or somewhere close to that) and put it on DC. Once you have the wire probed, press the lock or unlock button and see if you have voltage running through it. Do this for both sides and for both up and down wires. Now you have the wires you need. Done deal.

Now as far as the keyless entry, it will not effect it at all except for turning it off when you unlock it.
