Wamp, your Corvette has Passive Keyless Entry (PKE).
PKE was introduced in ’93 and came standard with coupes and convertibles. The coupes antennas are in the driver door and rear deck—Convertible antennas are in driver and passenger doors as well as the rear deck.
You can program the fob to open the driver door only, or to open both doors. PKE can also be completely turned off, this nice if you are working around your car and you have your keys in your pocket.
Get quotes from several Chevy dealers on the fobs before ordering! I have found prices for parts do vary from dealer to dealer.
As for learning the operation modes of your fob, see your owners manual, or, your ’96 owners VHS video. The video does a nice job demonstrating programming/operation of the fobs.
If the video was not with the car when you purchased it, you may eventually find one at the National Corvette Museums website auction.

Go to the Auction:
C4 Items (1984 to 1996), this is where I found a new one still in its plastic wrapper with a welcome letter from Chevrolet for $29.00.
If you ever require new batteries for the fobs, Batteries Plus has always had them in stock. CR24050 (they may also have them listed as CR2450BP) is what they take. You can locate a store near you on their website:

Happy New Year and enjoy that Vette!
