Is anyone running Kumo ECST ASX tires? If so, how are they? I'm looking at replacing my tires later this summer and have heard some good things about Kumo ~ thanks

I have them on only got a few hundred miles on them but for the price I am pleased got them all+mounting for $620 and if you go to Tire Rack to read reviews you will get some feed back. Them seem very good to me pretty quiet and hold well.

We have them on our BMW. They wear much better than the Ecsta 712's but I don't like the tread design as much.

Isn't it Kumho?

Bob

Which Kumho?

Both the ECSTA MX and ASX seem very reasonably priced. The MX looks good, but the ASX (all weather version) has much better treadlife rating.

Any experience? Sounds like performance vs. quiet and treadlife.

Bob

Well as I said before the ASX TL rating of 400 and the quietness were my deciding factors( as well as price) and unless you are racing the performance is very good.Directional tread patterns may look cool but are not for wet driving although they claim they will. They are rated a ultra high performance dry tires. The ASX is a "W" (149mph) rated tire and if I ever go that fast it will not be on the road if ever. For a daily driver I say save a buck get pretty good tires (ASX). Tire Rack.com has 186 ratings and 98% are very positive as a matter of fact they rank as the 8th best tire they sell even over tires that are triple the cost and wear out faster.

I thought about going with Kumho's before I went with Firestone SZ50's a few years ago. The only reason I didn't go with Kumho's was because the SZ50's were so highly touted. However, I would've probably gone with the Kumho's today because they are also highly touted and they cost less.

Thanks for all the input, I think my mind is made up and I'll be going with the ASX's. I've had my car up over 150 a couple of times, but I'll save that for the track (and other tires).

Tire comments

Let me preface my comments with the following.....I have 82,000 mi on a 2002 Z06, and put 230,000 on a 90 L98. On the 90, I ran GY Gatorbacks and GSCs, BFG KDWs & Comp TAs. On the Z06, I went thru 5 sets of F1 Supercars and am currently riding on Kumho Ecsta MX tires. The Z06 was purchased new, is my daily driver and from April thru October, I autox nearly every weekend and run monthly track events on Hoosiers.

For street use, the F1 Supercars are great dry traction tires with decent wet traction as long as you still have about half the tread. Once below that, they start to get a bit dicey in the wet, and a little greasier in the dry. Obviously, they are a soft compound and don't provide lots of miles, but they can't be beat for dry traction, especially at that price.

I switched to the Kumhos for 4 reasons:

1. I wanted a better wet traction tire for street use and for autoxing in the rain.
2. I wanted similar if not equal dry traction compared to the F1s.
3. The Goodyear F1 GS-D3 is not available in the rear Z06 size.
4. They were about $100 less per tire.

I am very satisfied with the Kumhos, for my requirements. You did not mention for what duty you had planned. Street, dry only? Autox? Daily driver? Tire choice depends on more than looks and cost, but how you drive the car, especially a Callaway.

I would suggest (with mileage and cost being secondary):
GY F1 Supercars for uncompromising dry traction.
GY F1 GS-D3s or Kumho Ecsta MX for street use, wet and dry, with the Kumho costing less and still being a pretty good autox tire.

FWIW, tire noise was NOT a factor in my decision. It's a Z06 fer crissake!<g>

Hope this helps.

tedster, thanks for all the info. Now that we are living in Tucson, AZ, I will be driving my Vette year around (again). I bought it to drive, so it is pretty much a daily driver that I also play with on the weekends. So I need a good all round tire (wet and dry conditions) that still allows me to 'get on it' every once in a while.

I have the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's for 2 years now and they still look new.

The Kumhos are a great value (i have the 712's). I think they are better than goodyear GSC's, and many other tires that came out a long time ago (GSC's came out in 1992). They are fine for my purpose... I drive my car daily and they are good wet or dry. There are better tires out there, but you can't beat the value of the kumhos. I think if you spend 2x as much on a tire, you won't get 2x the tire, you will probably only get a tire that is 25% better.

I have had the Goodyear, SZ50, NITTO 555 and now the MX. I love the MX the most. They seem to stick better and wear better.

Anyway, the roar of the exhaust should be the only noise one hears!:L:L:L

How many miles are on them?

hehehe! That is my view and I suspect that of our Callaway friend, too. But he did not indicate his intended use. Tire noise is an issue for some, so I thought it best to qualify my comments.

PS: Hell, I ran Flowmasters on my 90 and talk about an awesome, but loud, exhaust note.....it used to trigger car alarms in parking lots!<g>

Sorry about not specifying my driving habits. Tire noise is not a concern, couldn't hear them over my exhaust anyway. I bought the Callaway to drive every day, and do so. So what I'm looking for is a good all round (wet/dry) tire that also will allow me to drive it like it was meant to be when I'm on the open road, or cruising through a windy mountain pass. I figure W rated tire would provide what I'm looking for and, from the feedback I've been getting, It looks like Kumho might be the way to go.
