Good evening,

My 87 corvette convertible just got a new alternator and serpintine belt monday nite thanks to help from you guys...I did it in about an hour. The next project that needs to be addressed is the leaking of fluid in the rear end. I would like to try and correct this my self. It appears to be a lot of labor. Labor and time I have. Any tips or thoughts would be helpful and very much appreciated.

Where is the leak?
Pinion seal ( requires removal of pinion yoke ),
Side yoke seals (requires partial disassembly of diffhead to remove side yokes so seals can be replaced )
or the joint between diffhead and batwing

Hi Vetteoz,

Hope your doing well. Regarding the leak...I am not sure as I have not been under it yet. There appears to be so much to take off that I thought maybe this was time to replace all the seals. Do you think I nuts?

See what is leaking first. If you have to do the ring and pinions, fair enough. If it is just a cover, why bother with the rest?

Thanks aklim. I will be under checking it out on Saturday. Will let you know the verdict.

I'd rather you spray it off clean with brake cleaner and then dump some dye in it. Use a blacklight. For all you know, you may take the whole thing apart only to find it was coming out of the vent hole.

Good point. You know...When I bought the car I drove it about 2 hours home, parked it in the drive way just for the purpose of checking for any leaks. Let it sit about 3 hours and no drips. I was happy. The drive is on a little bit of a incline. The car parked in the garage drips over nite at the rear end only. I will take your advice and give it a good cleaning and try the dye. I really don't want to do more work than needed...
