Seems I forgot something. New lifters. My 88 should have hydraulic lifters. Can someone suggest brand/type for a replacement. The current lifters are stock with 144k miles on them.

I read some threads about hydraulic versus solid lifters and note that my new setup will have Crane racing rollers. I assume these are hydraulic aren't they.

I need some quick answers. They are putting this sucker back together as I "speak."

Your 88 model had a hydraulic roller cam from the factory,,,if you bought a aftermarket or stock hydraulic roller cam you must use hydraulic roller lifters,,Scoggin-Dickey has a pretty good deal on them.
Same goes for a solid roller cam if that's what you bought you must use the solid roller lifters,,don't take this wrong but whoever is building this for you should know this,,if not well????

I hope I interpited your question correctly

I think I caused at least part of the problem. I am buying most of my parts from Exotic Muscle, a local (Tempe, AZ) firm specializing in Corvette performance parts. I initially went to a reputable, qualified mechanic for what I thought was a simple oil pan gasket leak. He discovered a blown head gasket (both heads). I intended to just have the heads remilled, but as he got into it, the rings and other parts were clearly "dead." I then decided to just do the "upper" mods including a new intake, ported plenium and runners. That led to some comments from other owners at Corvette Action Center that said I was crazy to just do the top end without doing the bottom end. So little by little I went back to Exotic Muscle to buy additional parts, and in a couple of cases it is clear that they should have said "What about new lifters" or "What about new pushrods?"

When I went back for the pushrods the guy at Exotic went back to the cam mfg. for specs and ordered Chromeloy (sp?) "hardened" pusrods that were something like 5 thousands (or 50 thousands) longer than stock GM pushrods to accomodate the Crane rollers.

Anyway, I appreciate your comment because I have had some misgivings about that as well. I just hope that when this thing gets back together, probably next Monday, that it performs as I expect. I just got my reprogrammed PROM back from Jeff today, so I'm ready!

Thanks again,

Mike

... they should have said

Always research your subject thoroughly before you dive into a project, and remember, what you see here is only a person's opinion and not the mechanic that will be performing the work, be it you or someone else who is actually the "wrench". In the end your knowledge of the car and its components will benefit and increase as you go. Good luck with the project at hand. :upthumbs

get the GM OEM lifters

...That's what I was advised with respect to lifters needed
for my new cam. After market lifters are supposed to be
overpriced and not as good.

For what it is worth...TPIS and other recommend Crane high intensity lifters....

Hey Eagle, thanks for taking the time to respond. The guy from whom I am getting all my parts owns Exotic Muscle (www.exoticmuscle.com). He owns two Corvette racing cars and has a pretty good reputation around Arizona. He ordered stock GM lifters and said they were enough for my car with the new configuration. I do have some Crane Gold Rollers and Chromeloy Pushrods, but that's it from Crane.

The engine rebuild is going well. They are about ready to remount the engine. I guess they have to put the headers in at the same time to get them in properly. The intake, ported plenum, ported runners and heads all went together great. I'm hoping to have it running by Friday.

A little controversy has come up in my group of Vette enthusiasts as to what this engine is likely to develop in horspower and torque. My Sunday school teacher has a 454 large block that is dyno'd at 570 HP and some outrageous number of torque, and he estimates that at the rear wheels it should develop 340 hp and 430 torque. The Exotic Muscle owner said only 300-325 hp. I would think I already had 265 with the 52 mm throttle body, chip and Flowmasters, so I have to have more than 300. I'm going to get it dyno'd but I'm like a 6 year old on Christmas Eve, listening for the hoof's on the roof!

Thanks again.
