We had this dicssion today at work. I made the argument that a automatic locking rear diff such as they G80 package available on GM trucks is better than a limited slip diff. Limited slips as the name implies means they limit slip. Now lets say you are parked with one wheel on pavement and one on gravel, my corvette will spin the one on gravel, not a lot but some. They said if it has a properly working LSD it should step sideways or at least spin both. I say BS, its a limited slip unless you got those clutches set up so there is WAY lots of torque that can be applied before it slips. In above senerio I say my Vette's LSD works properly, any LSD should do about the same thing. A locker would lock both and put equal power to both in the above senerio.

My LSD for the record puts power to both rear wheels on level pavement with even traction equally.

In my world any LSD that is tight enough to allow both wheels to spin in the above senerio would cause binding in turns. Just my two cents.

Am I wrong here or they off there rockers??? Or are we both off our rockers???

it depends.. my vette same as yours will spin the wheel with least resistance and the Eaton locker that comes in the GM trucks will spin about a full revolution then lock (under 20mph) its a great differential however they are known to explode! the earlier trucks had what i believe to be a corkscrew type lsd in them my dads 98 and our 97 tahoe both have the G80 RPO code option which means LSD/locking diff or what have you.. and it works more like the lsd in my vette however it will make the other tire lock up pretty tight where as my vette will turn that one tire as fast as you want if its in mud or something, and like you said on pavement it will leave 2 Sweet black marks:D with mustangs trailing behind, MY truck has a new Auburn Lsd clutch type with springs and it will break loose and get sideways even when both tires arent equally loaded its the best set up you can buy it doesnt bind or lock up its just enough and not to much, a little story for you....as my ID says Towu4free i go to Nags head N.C every year many times and i love the thrill of 4wheelin on the beach and i Tow every stuck person out for absolutley no charge. makes me feel good inside, all i ask is that they return the favor to someone in need, anyway when i lifted my truck it caused some more flex in the suspension and thus the left front tire would dig and right rear causing an X flex which meant i had 2 tires pulling.....well that would work with them damn ford f350s they are heavy as hell so i bought my Auburn LSD and fixed that problem now it tracks level no matter how much im diggin down!:cool keep in mind my truck is an 87 chevy shortbed 4x4 4inch lift add a leaf in the rear 33 tires and im working on building the top end on my tbi for it now... its made me over 500 dollars in one trip in tips....enough of me jabbering on..thats my .99 cents worth;)

If you remember the courtroom scene from "My Cousin Vinnie" Marisa Tomei pointed out that a car with LSD could not spin the wheel on pavment and leave a burnout patch if the other wheel was on gravel.

Haha nice reference! Is she available for transmission work? :L

HMMM may need to be testing this all out Just for grins

I know if Im on pavement my 91 will spin both tires and go to the right

:D

I believe a Detroit True Trak has move grabbing power that the typical LSD since it uses gears instead of clutches to get traction. There's also the good ole ARB locker. I was planning on using the True-Trak if I ever change my diff.
