I am working on a 68 rear and I have found numbers just in front of drain plug. on the carrier cover b?or 8 128 . I asume these are the date codes. Are the ratio codes under the mount bracket or center mount plate for the strut rods and springs? The rear is in a car. I can't find any other numbers just forward of the drain as stated in books.

Thanks for your help
Jack

The ratio code and assembly date are stamped on the rough as-cast surface on the bottom of the housing, between the strut rod bracket and the spring mount. The casting number is on the passenger side of the nose of the housing, and the casting date is on the driver's side, partially hidden by the strut rod bracket.

Bad news for my 6,000 mile cross country trip, it read AO = 3.70 . Just to make sure I turned the wheel once around and the shaft spun 3.75 .

I guess I will have to change it out. It never ends, even after 38 years of owning the car. I changed the rear end in 1972, took it from a 68 vett. I was young, the orginal must have been a 3.70 because I never noticed the difference. Plus I never had a working speedometer all theese years.
