Do lock washers go on the bolt head side or the nut side of the assembly?

Thanks! :D

Nut.

Edit: EXCEPT when screwing into a tapped hole. Then it goes next to the bolthead.

Usually the lockwasher goes under the nut. If there is no nut, the lockwasher goes under the capscrew head. Hmmm, maybe there should be a lockwasher under the capscrew head and one under the nut?

And ... if there's NO nut ... but there is a FLAT washer at the bolt head... and there's a lock washer ... that lock washer usually goes between the bolt head & flat washer.

Actually all of you are right about it going under the nut except in the case of the rear shock upper bolt. There the L/W goes under the bolt head.

okay.. for 5 bonus points. which is the correct side for a flat washer on a bolt?

A flat washer goes over the threaded end, not on the head end of a bolt!
Heidi :D

ding ding ding..... now which side of the flat washer faces up?

This one's easy!

You use the flat side!
You have to check both sides carefully, and maybe use a level or flat surface, to check and be sure you are using the flattest side.

Anyone know how to find the bottom of a ball bearing? ;)
...the above joke is better as a visual...
