Can the stock computer handle a CAI and long tube headers w/free flowing cats, cross over pipes and mufflers without any reprogramming.

Thanks,
chris

"Can" the stock controller support headers, cold air intake and high-flow cats and exhaust?
Sure.

Will the engine make the power it should with those mods and no calibration work?
No way.

If you're not going to have the PCM custom programmed after those mods....save your money and just put the exhaust and the CAI on.

When you say "custom program" does that mean sending out the PCM or can an aftermarket tuner like the Diablo Predator handle the modifications?

Thanks,
Chris

Neither of those is the best choice.

The best choice is to, once the mods are complete, have a good aftermarket calibrator do the ECM cal on a chassis dyno. Problem with that is many people will spend thousands for headers and etc but won't spend the 500-800 it costs to have good calibration work done. Just a fact of life, I guess.

Next best is to send the engine controller to an aftermarket tuner like "PCM for Less". Given the right information about the engine and its mods "PCM for less" can get pretty close to an ideal cal.

My last choice would be a handheld. Admittedly, the handheld is the least complex solution.

Thanks Hib, appreciate the informative feedback.

I'll just leave what I have on now (Airaid, & MAD cat-back system). I will say things have gotten so much better in performance coming right out of the factory.
Since I grew up in the muscle car era I never thought performance would ever attain the days of the 70' LS6 Chevelle or any of the Hemi's. Not to mention it was less complicated too! A Holley 780 could go a long way with simple jetting as the mods were installed, however, those days are long gone - and sorely missed.

BTW-did you ever sell the "Big Block from Hell?"

You're welcome. Glad to be of service.

No. I had it for sale a few years ago but didn't get any serious offers at the price I wanted. Also, at the same time, there was a magazine which asked for a series of articles on tuning Holley DPs for street use so I used the car for that. Then I move my shop to a different place in California and took the car with me. Right now it sitting outside under a cover waiting for me to get some time to assess what to do with it. I'm either going to detail it and put it up for sale next Spring or I'm going to pull the engine, put some modern aluminum heads on it and freshen up the rest then sell it.

I for one am glad "those days are long gone."
Gone are the days of making 330HP and getting 6 mpg.
Those old cars may have been nostalgic, but todays cars are better in every way (except price or resale value!)

If my Z06 only got 6MPG on the highway, I likely wouldn't have bought it. It's not the price of gas, it's the stopping every 75 miles to fill up that would get old...especially on a road trip.

You missed the point...and your opinion is, well, your opinion.

BTW- 6 mpg is somewhat exaggerated, try 9-12mpg and, at a fraction of today's gas prices.

My '70 LT-1 had 3.70 gears and would get 12/17 mpg, but other than that, his opinion is mine as well. When it was idling, that LT-1 stunk so bad that it would, literally, make your eyes water. Modern cars are an unbelievable improvement...
