Seriously looking at an '01 A4 coupe.

Are there any specifics I should kee an eye out for? Do automatics have the oil burning problem, or was that just M6's?

Thanks! I'm excited...

I have an 04 automatic coupe. No oil burning problem. No problems at all. Not much difference between 01 and 04.

There's a list of warranty campaigns that I can't find the link to, but these were my personal warranty campaigns:

08/11/2005 243093 # V1145 - 04006 - PERFORM REPROGRAM AND FUNCTIONAL TEST - MANUALS ON 45007 miles
07/21/2003 197173 # N2829 - RELAY - ENGINE WIRING - REPLACE 20379 miles
03/03/2003 188839 # N0110 - BATTERY - ONE - REPLACE 15591 miles
01/13/2003 186525 # R4060 - FUEL TANK FILLER DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR REPLACEMENT 15001 miles
07/08/2002 246432 # E7200 - IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER REPLACEMENT 7899 miles
07/08/2002 246432 # N2320 - IGNITION AND START SWITCH REPLACEMENT 7899 miles
04/03/2002 274917 # N6600 - WIRING AND/OR CONNECTOR - BRAKE SYSTEM/TRACTION CONTROL - 1433 mile

Other potential problems:
  • Steering column lock.
  • AC display.
  • Rocking chair driver’s seat.
  • Control module. GM replacement doesn’t last either.
  • Exhaust Jingle
  • Leaking differential.
  • Window motor.
  • Door locks.
There are other issues, some less significant or costly. I don't want to paint it black. The C5 is a fantastic piece of technology and personally, I genuinely enjoy and marvel it. Some of the problems may be commensurate with wear/tear and age. Be excited, but like with any car, be cautious with the particular C5 you choose ie. which campaigns have been performed and which if any problems have been corrected.

Good luck!

The steering column lock is not a problem with the 01' A4 as the locking mechanism was removed before production of that year. I have an 01' A4 and of that list, the only things that I have experienced was the leaking differential which I fixed myself, and the rocking seat (again, which I fixed myself). Any common problem that you may experienced has been well documented on multiple forums and the fix can be done cheaply by yourself. My differential repair cost me $13 in parts. If the engine has not been modified and the car looks garage kept, I'd jump on it for the right price. The 01' was the year vehicle in which most of the significant changes were done on. You can't go wrong with a stock 01' - 04' A4.

2001 - A Very Good Year

2001 was a break through year. Most of the C5 introduction problems were history and the car was nearing perfection. When looking - focus on one owner cars with less than 40,000 miles. Most of the owners will have full documentation on everything that's been done to the car. Good luck.

the rocking seat (again, which I fixed myself).

Turns out the car I am looking at has this rocking drivers seat problem. What is the cause of this? And how much will it cost me if I fix it myself?

If you fix it yourself, it will cost you less than a dollar. The trick is finding the washers you need to complete the fix. As for the cause, here are the instructions which show what causes the failure.
