Restoring '81 and the steering column was torn apart by the previous owner.

I replaced the missing components but can't figure out how the telescopic shaft locks into the column, so I can mount the compression tool and install the clip.

I also want to make sure I'm doing it right. Haynes and Chilton are no help below the steering wheel.

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome Miami J

My scanner is not working, so I used my wife's and I don't know if they are clear enough to help. Never the less here they are..

I recommend getting 2 things if you like working on your 81 ;) #1. GM Shop Manual for the 1981 ~ ST-364-81. AND #2 1981 Assembly Manual.

Both are usually on eBay or some of the aftermarket Corvette suppliers sell them. The Shop Manual expect somewhere around $40 ~ $75 and the Assembly Manual around $21 ~ $25 or so.. GREAT reference's :thumb

I'm guessing you got it figured out? To compress the lock plate you need to lock the column (telescopic part), and you can't put the factory locking bolt in and get the compressor on. Find a short bolt that's the correct size witha small head and put that in the column end. You do need to already have the longer shaft (wedge) in the shaft to give that bolt something to push on. got it? I knew you would.
