Looks Like the 05s Have an Oil Consumption Issue

I don't want to start a panic but I just got off the phone with my guy at GM and he is telling me that the 05s are seeing an oil consumption problem around 5000 miles. Not all of course. The dealer that services my car has 5 so far. I know this cause I have one of them. Curious to see if anybody here has had this experience. Mine uses around a quart every 200 miles.

GM says they must see the car do this 3 times before they can start to remove components ie the engine. At least that is what I'm being told.

A quart every 200 miles is quite excessive! It should be easy to show that type of consumption 3 times. Just make sure you have several extra quarts with you!

Oh yes I agree. My blower motor doesn't use that much oil under 22 psi of boost!

They have already tried to give me the "maybe my driving habits are off" speech but I wasn't having any of it. If I want to drive my car in the upper rpm range I should be able to do so without losing oil. For the love of god, it's a Corvette! The Service Mgr is pretty cool though and is leaning towards making this easy for me. He just needs to fill his corporate squares... one of which is the 3 time duplicatation thing.

And they told me not to add any oil for 500 miles! That I have a problem with. I'm not going to run the car 3 quarts low. Sorry. I'll just bring it by and let them note the milage and top it off.

Aviano was great... but I was always just passing through. I've been in 11 years now.

Boy you scared me. Just checked. 3700 miles. No oil loss. Good luck with your problem. :)

To me, a quart of consumption even every 3000 miles would not be acceptable. That is 1/5 of what you put in there. If you drained 1/5 of your body's blood, would you still be healthy?

This happened with the C5's and it's happening again?

This is a thread to follow... this is the first I’ve heard of this.

I really did not think it was an issue until the service guy told me he has 5 05s with around 5000 miles that are having the same issue. I really hope we dont find any more cars like this on the board.

Thats an extreme oil loss! If it's not leakage, thats a ton of blow by. I would think the tailpipe would be juicy etc. The general will need to make good, but looks like a heavy duty rebuild cost.

You know that is not something I thought of... great point!

Mobilone does not some as much as dino oil when its burned. That may explain why I don't see lots of smoke. It uses much more when I keep her in the high rpms.

I would suggest a quart of oil every 1300 miles is acceptable.

Good luck

Blood vs. Oil ?A qt. every 3 gs is very acceptable. GM wouldnt consider any warranty!:lou

HI there,
The standard is 1 quart in 2000 miles per GM consumption guidelines.
Now, in order to perform an oil consumption test, you must seal the system and check the oil level every 500 miles.
However, a Corvette engine may not completely break in all the components for up to 5000 miles.
So, with that in mind, the more aggressively your driving, the more oil you will consume.
This is always the case, due to windage in the engine.
And as a sidenote, there are NO bulletins or preliminary documents as of this time for any type of oil consumption on LS2 engines in the GM database.

I jsut went through a quart in 157 miles. I appreciate you verifing what GM says to me as I can be sure I'm not getting the shaftola. They want to see the oil level at 500 miles. I'm bringing it back in next week.

I picked up my C6 a week ago and I got a chance to talk with a shop guy about C6 issues they have seen. I had not heard about the oil consumption issue until he mentioned it first. They only saw one issue here in Sacramento so far and said that pushing GM is the only way to get it resolved since there is no offical recognition.

At 12,000 miles, my C6 burns no oil.

I have 11,500(or about) on my c6 and the car warns me to check oil (Low Oil) comes up on computer. This happens every 1000 to 1500 miles!!!When I mentioned this to the dealer(their a G.M. performance center on top of being, just a DEALER)they said I must be really running the car!!

That sounds typical. The excuses not the oil use ;)

Unbelievable! Just another uninformed dealer.

Don't wait three times before they do something about excessive oil consumption. That's a serious problem that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Ask the dealer to conduct a complete leak-down test of all eight cyllinders.
