I read "the LS7 utilizes an internal check bypass valve in the filter itself." However upon removing the oil radiator pipes, I saw some mechanical contraption in between the oil in/out ports on the oil pan. Could this be the bypass valve? If not, what is it?

The OEM filter has a bypass valve in it. It is designed to open if/when the oil filter becomes plugged with debris. This "bypass valve" spring is specific to the LS7 engine. This is why only OEM filters are to be used if you want to keep your warranty in tact.

I think what you saw in the pipes (in/out) was a ball check valve to keep oil from draining back into the pan from the oil bag. If the system were full of oil, it could siphon back into the pan since it's lower.

Just FYI there is a bypass valve in the oil cooler line manifold. If you look at the EOC manifold above the filter you will see a allen head bolt on the back side that is the plug to gain access to the valve.
