'96 LT4 Coupe, White/Red
I have sold my C3 and am now looking at C4's. I came across a '96 coupe with an LT4, fairly low miles and appers to be in very good condition. The one thing I noticed that seemed a little strange was where the clutch engaged with the clutch pedal. I engages about 2-3 inches from full release of the pedal. Most of the other C4 manula transmissions I have driven engage about half pedal. Is this anything to worry about? Is there an adjustment that would make it engage a little sooner?

Thanks!

Granted it's been a few years since I last drove an LT4, but I do remember the clutch on my GS did not engage until the very end of the stroke. I don't know if there is an adjustment that can be made for that though.

If you like the car, I'd recommend taking it to a mechanic and have them give it a once-over to make sure the car is in good condition.

Totally acceptable!

The clutch for an LT4 does act differently than any other clutch I have ever seen or driven. Feels very much like a "button" clutch disc. Basically, it is either ENGAGED or NOT ENGAGED. If you wanted to feather the clutch activation, you would be hard pressed to be able to do it!

SAVE THE :w

Lt4man is right.

My clutch pedal (at 30k miles) has a long stroke but engages/disengages up toward the top. And it's crisp engagement too as he said. As long as there is some free travel at the top (1 to 2 inches), you're ok. You might ask the owner about what fluid has been used in the transmission and rearend (this is unreleated to the clutch), and what the status of the waterpump is. You want to hear him say that the specified ZF fluid has been used, and that the waterpump and optispark have been replaced with the OE parts. The '96 LT4 is argueably the nicest "everyman's" C4 available. LT4man has a Collector's Edition and he knows these cars inside and out.

Several other forum members are quite knowledgeable about these cars as well. I've got a set of the factory manuals if you need something looked up.

Good luck.

Rmonty.......What I referred to as the specified ZF fluid is this:

TRANSMISSION OIL (status) - Vascular flow of oil through the porous Phosphorus-bronze (Pb) material of each synchronizer is essential for effective British Thermal Unit (BTU) heat exchange occurrence. Frequent transmission oil changes will ensure lower Pb particle levels suspended in the oil. The ZF S6-40 6-speed transmission is lubricated by engine type oil. Manufacturer recommendations specify the use of GM P/N 1052931 (5w-30) or BMW P/N 07510009420 (10w-60) oil.
Approximate oil capacity of the ZF S6-40 is 2.2 quarts.
FYI - the BMW 10w-60 oil is fully-synthetic and is used in the BMW M5 engine. "From Bill Boudreau's site"

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I checked the car out thoroughly, looked at repair receipts that the owner had and made the decision to go ahead and buy it. It has been maintained by a local Chevrolet dealer with a great reputation. Many of the parts mentioned above have been replaced. I am excited about becoming a C4 owner, finding a nice LT4 is a bonus!

Bob....

Artic white / torch red......that's my car exactly. Congratulations! Great car. Send me your email via PM and I'll send you a couple of photos of my interior for reference. I can't seem to post photos on the form.

Hey Louis....here's the email: SCMedtest@aol.com.

I hope your engine is continuing to work out. Every time I check my oil I think of you. Nothing particularly is happening. I'm going to Mid American Fun Fest Sept. 20-21. It's my vacation for the year.

Check your email.:) I do make sure my oil light(:bash) comes on every time I turn the key on. And check my oil every week. So far no leaks and has 6000 miles on the new LT4 and the oil is not low.:cool Have a fun week.
