I'm currently saving up to get my first vette. I really want to get a LT4 but the prices on earlier LT1 cars are a bit better as well as insurance being less the older you go. My question is, Is the LT4 conversion kit just as good as the factory engine?

The LT4 conversion kit I bought from gmpartsdirect.com is a top end kit. It does not replace anything in the block except the cam. The LT4 has different pistons and other components in the block.

You might want to check out www.grandsportregistry.com as there are lots of details on the the LT4 there and comparisons between the LT1.

Besides the cost of the LT4 conversion kit, you'll need to invest in a computer reprogram or a new chip (OBD1 cars). And, if the older LT1 is high on miles, you might want to consider a lower end rebuild (rings, bearings, oil pump, etc.) at the same time. By the time you do all this and consider the time the LT1 car is in the shop and not drivable, you might be better off spending the money on the LT4 to start with.

I'm happy with my LT4 conversion - 328HP at the rear wheels. Then again, I've owned my 92 since Oct 91 and it looks like I'm going to keep it a lot longer also. With a good mechanic and proper installation, there's no reason the LT4 conversion can't be as good as a factory LT4 as far as performance and reliability are concerned - it just will not be a factory 96 LT4 no matter how you slice it.

Hope this helps.

I was just going to post this, but I see Tuna has decided to hang onto his 92 LT1. (Tuna, hard to let a car go when you’ve had it that long and are the original owner).

Maybe you should PM Tuna?

Sounds like he has a nice 92 that he is thinking of selling.

His post is in the C4 General Discussion forum. Here’s is a link.
