Morning all....Well, I need some advice or direction....such a wealth of knowledge here in CAC..

While driving home from a car show Saturday afternoon, while on a major route here in southeastern PA, my drivers side muffler FELL OFF the car!!! I immediately pulled off to the shoulder of the road..Their were no indications it was loose at all, none..had an 18 wheeler right behind me and a slew of other cars screeching on their brakes, smoke everwhere horns blaring...my old muffler being dragged and crunched by cars running over it while i'm sitting in my car on the side of the road watching this going on..Well, the car was flatbedded back to my local mechanics shop as she sits and wais for me to decide what to do...OK, now the question as to what to purchase....my car had dual tip monza mufflers and i love the throaty sound....but am open to any ideas. Car is a 1979..the one in the picture..

1. What mufflers are on the market for a C3? Since I have to get one, I've already decided to change both of them..
2. does anyone have the polished mufflers and tailpipes? How do you like them???
3. Any muffler going to increase my HP? Intersting that many of them claim that fact....
4. What kind of cost am I looking at just to purchase the mufflers.....I'm not interested in the Borla route...too expensive for my 1 income household...
5. Do you go the speedy mufler or midas muffler route, as far as getting them to fix this or buying from them?? ( would NEVER, EVER consider this in the past, but just wanted to ask the question)....

Signed:

REALLY bummed in PA.

as a general rule, anything that is for a turbo application will flow much better than a stocker.they are only cheap (40$ +-)

Andy,
Just don't start a new trend by putting a 'fart can' on it ;LOL I saw here in town yesterday someone has a gray primered honda (or something) with the flip doors like your Vette - had the doors up all day like we were supposed to be impressed by it. Too bad you weren't here to ask the guy if your car is what he wished his was :gap
As for the muffler, unless you lost both of them, I'd try to match the other one. My 81 has 'super turbos' on it - probably from Eckler's or someplace like that from the previous owner. I don't know if a muffler shop has something like that. You can get the tips at some auto parts stores, probably not like you're looking for though.
You didn't mention - did any of those honking, swerving motorists stop to help? I don't know about your part of PA, but mine is full of hillbillys in pickup trucks that never would have touched the muffler on the road. Anyhoo, get her back together soon!

Any auto parts or junk on a busy highway can be serious, what is funny are the drivers who honk horns at stuff that have no ears.Good luck

that s*cks Andy! Sorry you had trouble yesterday.
does your mechanic have any suggestions on what kind of muffler to use?

with the side pipes on my car I don't concern myself normally about muffles so don't know much about them, but I know Flowmaster is a pretty popular brand, along with MagnaFlow. You may want to check those out.

Let em see...2 people stopped to see if I needed help. 2 Women in a 1981 white vette..and a kid in a tuner....People were waving to me, even vette people were waving as they passed by......I didn't need help..cell phones really help in those situations, plus I have a local towing service and my mechanics number speed dialed in my cell.....

I've been checking all moring about mufflers...not sure yet. Like the polished chrome look as well......

Andy,

At Maple Grove on Saturday I picked up a product selection guide at the Flowmaster display. I'd be glad to slip it into the mail for you if you'd like. Or I could try to fax it in pieces as it is an odd size and I'd have to make some copies first. Either way, I'd be glad to try to get it to you.

Thanks for the tips. I have been looking at Flowmaster, Borla, Corsica etc....But am going with what I had on the car, Monza dual tips. Can get both muflers w/shipping from Mid America for less than $150.00...Pretty decent price and I like the throaty sound......
