Luggage Rack

I am looking to replace the luggage rack on my 72. Does anyone know how the grommets come out? Do I have to drop the gas tank? Sorry if this is a repeat question. Thanks

Those that don't fall out the bottom will pull right out once you take the pressure off them.

Thanks, the old rack is off and these things dont seem to want to budge either way, up or down. I dont want to mess with them too much, fear of scratching paint.

The original dealer package used well-nuts, but your rack could have been installed by a previous owner. Might not hurt to take a look underneath to see if you can determine what was used.

If the existing nuts are in good shape, you can probably use them with the new rack. They usually don't show with the hardware installed.

As i remember the well nuts, they have the threads on the bottom and contract and expand as you tighten them up, The rubber has probably stayed in this compressed state. See if you can expand them using the nut partially screwed in and pushing on it.

Thanks for all the info. I believe the rack was an original dealer installed option. I was able to use the old well nuts with the new rack and new hardware.
