made my own scanner cable (ALDL)

Just built a cable to run one of the scanner programs for OBI, ALDL
My problem is my laptop does not have Rs232, so I bought a Belkin RS 232 to
USB converter cable and build the cable from the winaldl site.
I am hoping some one has experience with this, the winaldl does not support
USB so I down loaded the Datamaster 32, which has a 20 use trial meter, and does support USB.
Have any of you sucessfully used the Datamaster software?
My question is - is there any handshaking with my 86 ECU ? or does it continually
output serial data (E pin)
The schematic for the cable only spec'd receiving data on E and ground on A
is that all the interface I need?

Thanks JS, I'm looking for a simple conversion from the digital info (255) to volts or time.

Scanner operational !! I built the 2 transistor cable (bi-directional) and am running it on my old RS232 computer (the USB to serial doesnt work) - I am recording information with both WinALD (Jonas) and Datamaster software.
my 86 requires a 10k resistor to receive data from thr ECM.

Now, understanding the data I am collecting is another story.
