I purchased my ninth Corvette last summer, 2002 Electron Blue coupe, 6 sp. My 72 and 81 were Manuals, but I dont recall either on having some type transmission lock so when the key is out it is locked in reverse. Right now it has no steering column lock either. I know there was a recall on the steering column lock that may be why it is diabled. It would seem that when you are out with the top off parked anyone could take the trans out of gear and steer and push the car away. Does anyone know how it would have been set up from the factory?

I have a C5 coupe with a 6speed manual also and they do not have a trans. lock.I don't know that they could roll the car away but they will not be able to start it without the "Pass Key"-no fuel or spark!

There should be a cable on the engine compartment side of the steering column. This cable goes from the steering column to the transmission reverse linkage on the trans itself. When the trans is in reverse it pushes a rod on the column which will let you take your key out.

Hope this makes sense to you.

Cheers

I have had the shifter out of my car and the only thing that runs to the transmission , which as you know is in the rear on the C5 & C6 , is the singular rod that runs from the shifter housing mounted on the torque tube to the trans axle. There are no cables that run to the shifter housing or the trans axle.
