1994 corvette red w/ white stripe
I'm thinking seriously of selling my 94 corvette and buying a c5. I've always said my next vette will be a manual because Ive heard its more fun to drive.anyone have any advice on which is better or more fun to drive?

If you love the full driving experience get the MN6. If you talk on your phone or have allot of other things going on while you drive get the A4. However please note opinions differ.

I personaly Like My Z-51 6sp!! It's Fine in traffic!! I use 1 st, 3 rd, and 5th most of the time, and averge 23-25 in City and 32-34 Hwy on trip's!! I love the Power range in all gear's, and I think the CAGS Suck's when the warranty out so is it!! I don't Rag it,But I do Drive it!! :D junk!!

RedC4,

You really have to decide what best for you. The C5 automatic is a terrific transmission and ideal for lots of stop and go traffic. The six speed is a blast to drive through country roads. Either way, you can't loose.

Take a few for test drives and see how you like it.

I've been a 6-sp guy for years - even my grocery getter is a 6-sp manual. I've always liked the idea of being able to select the gear I want when I want it.

With the new 6-speed auto coming out, I'm going that route next - because it has the paddle mode that allows me to select the gear I want when I want it.

The main reason that I traded my '97 was that it had an automatic. I really wanted the 6 speed. And I thought that I might as well get the beast as long as I was at it. I use my Z06 as a daily driver, I drag race it, autocross it, etc. I really like the stick.

After reading your post it sounds like you want your c5 to be a manual transmission.

I've had both trannies in the C5 and personally prefer the six speed manual. Both great choices...Looking at why I personally like the manual transmission over the automatic its just that it always allows you to pretend to be a race car driver as even as your not speeding ..............

Thats what the Manual six speed does for you. It allows you more easily to imagine a little bit closer that your racing around (even at legal speeds etc)

First, welcome to the CAC.
Second- what type of driving will you be doing in it? I would vote for the manual in almost all cases unless you have a long commute in a large metropolitan area with LOTS of stop and go traffic. Or, like Joe Mackin mentioned, if you're a big cell phone talker, you'll find that it is difficult to shift and steer and hold the phone at the same time. I go to great lengths to avoid using the cell phone while driving.

For those who use cell phones and drive. The motorola V710 cell phone and blue tooth ear piece is great! (wireless and you just push the ear piece button and say the persons name to dial.)

Its really a cool device.

Sorry to go off topic...

For a C5 I'd probably opt for the six speed manual...but a new C6 coupe or vert purchase in 2006? I might opt for the new Automatic/manumatic 6 speed...

Supposed to be a hot ride.

Good luck...

The number one option that had to be on my 'vette was the 6 speed. Second, it had to be a Coupe. I have a truck I use if I have to drive in traffic. The vette is for fun and the 6 speed just adds mor of the fun to the ride. - R

How we say it in the Younger Days? (Dhis is TTit's Man!!) I like mine!!:upthumbs junk!!

Welcome! MInes a six speed and was my first criteria in selection. I've driven both in the C4's and I am just a 6-speed guy. To me it gives you more of a sports car feel and more control of my driving experience. 'Nuff said.

If you want the full experience and control of cruising in your Corvette, I'd recommend the 6spd stick. My last Corvette was an automatic and by comparison, I like running the gears manually. In the long run, it boils down to preference. I've seen some blindingly fast modified Corvettes with auto tranny's.

Six speed definitely! Even in stop and go traffic it really isn't a problem due to Vette's torque. Before I bought my Z06 I had an '03 Coupe with an automatic home for the weekend (after the dealer insisted). While it was the best automatic I have driven it was still just an automatic and definitely no substitute for a manual. I like being able to preselect the gear I need to be in when I see an opening coming up in traffic, that way when the opening gets there I can instantly accelerate in to it - with an automatic there is always the bit of hesitation when it downshifts. I don't see the paddleshift automatic as really being any better - it still doesn't give you the direct connection that a manual gives you - now a paddle shift manual (like I think Porshe and Ferrari have) might be a different story. I would never buy a Corvette with an automatic. My opinion is (though I am sure not everyone will agree) that if you care about performance at all then go with a manual, if you just care about being seen in the car then an automatic would be okay. ;)

get the MN6

you can always just shift from 1 to 4th in the manual, its essentially an automatic with all the loss of pickup and no interface with the car, but with the clutch you can still push start it if your battery goes dead. seriously, i have drove autos my whole life, and i made sure this car was a manual. And except for pulling the auto out of my 1971 vega and putting in a manual, which made the car so much fun to drive, i actually enjoyed putting in the quart of oil per tank of gas after the trany change. oh i almost forgot my biggest dissapointment in having an auto, picture yourself back at high school graduation, and your on your way to the keggers after the ceremony, and your gaurenteed to get laid if you can get there alive, you go out to yoru automatic car parked on a hill no less, and you find your cool parking lights were left on, and your battery is dead, you cant get a ride and you now enter the navy a virgin..... I will never be caught with an automatic trans again. on a good note i did finally get to meet up with that woman i was supposed to lay back in high school at my 25th year reunion, she was in between her 3rd and 4th divorce, and i caught her on a week where she was single and available, it was the best piece in my life, she did all the work and thanks to viagra i stayed with her for a long time, and her lacking teeth made the loss of her palatteable. thanks for listening,

in conclusion, manual all the way.

Get the Manual!

As my handle on here says, I had an 82 corvette before the C5, 82's only came with an automatic. I liked the car, but wanted to feel the engine and the car more. So I sold it and got the c5. And that was one of my "must-have" criteria, a stick shift, again. I've loved manuals since my Mustang GT back in the 80's and wanted that feel again. In the end, its your choice though!
Good luck!
