Master Cylinder reservoir grommet leak

On my 89, the front Master Cylinder reservoir is leaking past the grommet. Could I just replace the grommet? I see the part number in my catalog is 14067532. After you siphon out the brake fluid, I'm guessing you just pull up on the reservoir and pull it out, then just replace the grommet?

Would air get in the system by replacing the grommet?

Looks to me like its plug and play. IE FSM for my 95 has it as straightforward remove and replace...

Ok thanks. Yeah, I had just flushed the brakes, so I was hoping I didn't have to do it again, as I did the gravity flush. But I guess I'll flush it again. The only thing is since the brake fluid is clear, I won't know when the new fluid is coming out.

When I flushed the brakes last with a gravity flush, the rears just dripped out, and it wasn't too dark. I noticed the front brake fluid came out quicker, and looked like transmission fluid. Haha. I had figured the front and rears would look the same, but I guess the fronts absorb more moisture.

I did notice on the fronts that it didn't really look like the new fluid was pushing out the old fluid. More like it was mixing with the old fluid. Which is why I think it took so long.

I got it on there. It was a bitch though. I put the grommet on the reservoir then put the reservoir on the Master Cylinder.

When you put the reservoir on, you have to put your thumbs inside and push down on the top of the grommet to help keep it from rolling up on the bottom of the reservoir.

Then, your still not done and the grommet isn't seated inside. So you have to use something to push on top the grommet inside while you rock the reservoir back and forth. You'll have to do that all around the grommet so it is seated all the way around inside.

Well, the thing still leaks. Oh well. It looks like it is leaking at the top of the grommet where it meets the reservoir cup.

When I changed MC's earlier this year... I had to make that change also.... I used a brass punch to apply some real force to sealing those seals.. you can feel them pop into place.... If they arent flat all teh way around then the seal isnt down....

I think it is down all the way. It looks just like the other seal on the outside and inside. So, it looks down to me.

And yes, it was hard to get it in.

Agreed! Very difficult to get seated!!! I am beginning to question the desige of this MC! they dont seed to be very durable.

Yeah, I don't know what the deal is. I didn't see any damage anywhere to indicate why it would be leaking. I had assumed it was because the old seal was all cracked. Though, I wonder if maybe it could be because I had to pull it and reinstall it 3-4 times? When I had to pull it, I used pliers and had to stretch it some to get the pliers on it.

The problem was I had it in right on the outside, but on the inside it wasn't seated. So, I had to pull it and try again several times. I was finally able to get it seated on the inside by using something to push on the seal while I rocked the reservoir back and forth.

But it does appear to be leaking from the same place as the fluid likes to collect in that dimple area on the engine side of the MC beside the front reservoir cup.
