MAT relocation location

Jsust wondering if anyone has relocated thier MAT sensor, and where did you put it, the instructions say to locate at the front bottom of the air filter.

Any pics would be great.

Of all the pictures I took when going through the latest phase of my engine project, that is one picture I kept missing by inches. :duh

I have no clear images of where mine is installed in the air box (I installed it in the left side of the "neck" where the MAF on mine was once connected. So, in answer to your question, that is where you relocate the incoming temperature sensor. ;)
 
They say that where it is now it can be inaccurate. So what you want to do is move it to a location where it can be more accurate. I understand why they say to mount it to the stock air cleaner assembly, or possibly you could mount it to the radiator shroud. What you want is the most accurate temperature reading as what your engine is actually seeing. If i were going to do it I would mount it to the fan shroud somewhere.

But Craig, that wouldn't necessarily be indicative of the air entering the intake manifold. You'd get an idea of the ambient air temperature that way but not of the intake charge; the idea is to monitor the intake charge while avoiding the heat transfer from the metallic surfaces such as the plenum and runners.

I understand that, but doesn't that sensor have insulation that prevents this. I have never seen one, but i would imagine that the base is insulated, and the sensor would stick up into the plenum avoiding any metallic surfaces. It monitors the air inside the plenum, which would be the air entering your engine.

Insulation, ;LOL here is a pic of the all metal sensor.

The new MAT sensor is completely different.

I was told that where it connects to the plenum that their is insulation. However that when the part of the sensor gets inside the plunum it is exposed to the air.

When I was at the Cruisfest I sat in on c4c5specialist's technical seminars, and that was one of the questions i asked him. He said that there was insulation all around the sensor but when it went up into the plenum it was exposed to the air therefore giving a pretty accurate reading. You have to make sure if you move it you dont have to move it to a place where it is to cold because your computer will advance the timing to much. I have decided to just leave it in the plenum.
 
I'm not sure what you guys are talking about, from what I can see it is all metal, the internal part of the sensor looks like brass brazed toa stell holder, you can the fillet inside.

As well how come all the newer cars have the sensor within the airflowbehind the filter.

Where is the air sensor in the C5.

Well i am not sure i have never taken one off, but i will make it a point to do that this weekend so i can clear this whole thing up. Yeah if i was going to do it I would attach it to the air filter housing, not the radiator shroud. But what do you gain 1 hp which i think would be about it. However like you said all the new cars have it behind the air filter, so i would probably put it their. Kind of a rhetorical question.
 
I put mine to the RIGHT side of the air cleaner housing. Drilled a small hole near one of the clips and then Permatex'd it into place.

I can snap a pic if you want; my housing is on a shelf at the moment...

Yes i would also like to see pictures of this, as i have been wondering how people are doing it. Did you feel any noticable difference? Was it worth doing it?

I think this MOD falls into the "I did not feel any difference category".

But, there is always a butt,;LOL when you combine this and all the other basic mods, they add up to a bunch of HP gains.

The one thing that kind of bugs me is that there are a lot of people puttin these mods down, but they have no actual stats to back it up, granted I don't have any to support it, YET.

Ya ain't gonna feel nuthin' in the seat of your pants - as far as horsepower goes that is. :L

It is basically just an improvement over the original location used by the factory; the air box is more accurate in helping the ECM decide what to do next. ;)

Oh do not get me wrong I am not putting these mods down I would just like to have a little more concrete info before i pull the plenum off and move this to find out the car might run worse.

The MAT sensor is used by the ECM to delay EGR until the manifold air temperature reaches about 5°C (40°F).

A failure in the MAT sensor circuit should set either a Code 23 or Code 25.
Codes 23 & 25 are low/high temperature excursions. ;)
 
Thats roughly where I was thinking about moving it to.
