1999 silver vette ,78 silver ann
Hi , could someone explain matching numbers. I have a 1978 Silver Ann vette with I believe all original equipment. Where do I find #s and what do I do to check numbers. I should add I have original invoice, build sheet if that helps THANKS DAVE

Dave,
Not too sure on the 78 but matching numbers normally means the engine block has a partial replication of the VIN as well as the transmission, not sure about the differential.
The engine normally has the engine code and part of the VIN stamped just fwd of the R/H head on the deck of the block, unless the head has been decked and the stamp is gone.
Some 78 people ought to chime in here eventually.

The engine and transmission are as far as most folks are concerned with matching numbers. However, there are lots of other parts that are dated or stamped in a fashion that shows when they went on the car. If you send me an e-mail at home and tell me some more about your car I can give you some numbers and places to look. OR, if you contact the NCRS and get the judging manual for a 78 it has all that information in it. Here is a short list of parts with numbers with dates: Alternator, Starter, Master Cylinder, Glass, Tires, Wheels and Belts. Some parts just have a number on them like pullies, carb, switches and electrical bits all over the car. I am by no means the authority on all this but I rebuilt my 78 into an NCRS top flight car by following the manual. If you need more information send me an e-mail.

'78 Registry?

You might also want to become a member of the 1978 corvette registry (if there is one - search ithe nternet), where you'll find a wealth of help and information from other 1978 corvette owners.

Matching Numbers

Thanks for the feedback. Life is easier with other peoples experience at your disposal. Thanks from a Pro-American Canadian which most Canadians are despite our government and some media.

where matching numbers is good is when buying a used car.if the police find a "HOT" engine or transmission in your vehicle, you just lost your car.and you will probably be charged with posession of stolen property.
there's a thriving market for old muscle car ownerships, keys ,locks, and serial numbers(dash).they're that lazy now that they steal a car , buy a matching set of the above off a wreck, swap the windshield(and numbers)and send the car away to be sold.they don't even paint them.
i think matching serial numbers is an important thing unless you did the "unmatching" mike
