metal or fiberglass

Nope, they are fiberglass. This is why you must use the jack points outlined in the owners manual, if you don't the jack will go up through the floor boards.. :)

well i spoke to a body shop today who specializes in vettes.he said the floorpans where the seats are are steel !!!!!! so steel they are.

Horsepucky

Your buddy / friend is full of it.
Ain't no steel in a Corvette (body)except reinforcements bonded into the fibreglass.:beer

Just to verify I ask the body shop at my local Chevrolet dealer they have rebuilt many of them after a crash and here is what they said..

There are steel rails supporting the seat area but most is a fiberglass floor shell . Your foot well area is all just shell.

Partly
From the front of the seat forward and up the firewall is glass. From the seat back ( including the tunnel ) and the rear bulkhead are steel
Look under the car , you will see the seam where the glass is bonded to the steel at that area

As stated the floor is metal, there is a section that runs forward that is fiberglass but most of the floor is metal.
