What is the best adhesive to use when bonding metal parts to SMC fiberglass? I'm in the process of adhering the metal reinforcement brackets to the front of the fiberglass hood surround.

The can of Evercoat SMC bonding adhesive warns against using it to bond metal to fiberglass. The original factory adhesive was green and pliable.

I just bought this adhesive from ebay called PascoFix and PascoFill. I havent recieved the item yet, but it sounds like the real deal. Heres a link so that you can decide if its for you. You can google it and find a place to buy. Now that I think about your application, not sure if it comes in, or is affordable in that type of quantity.

A really good fiberglass adhesive is 3M 5200. This is a marine adhesive and can be found at most marine parts places. I have found it at Lowe's and Home Depot also. It comes in a small tube or a standard caulk type container. This stuff bonds most anything and is watertight (for use above and below the water line on boats.) Works great for Vette's. I bonded my roof panel back to its frame with 5200 and never looked back. One thing it has a set up time of 24 hrs. I think it is basically set after a few hours. The directions state something about full cure in 72 hrs I do believe.

I use Fuzor Adhesive's !! Strong Stuff!! 3M's Good just don't set as Fast!!:upthumbs junk!!

The reason the original adhesive was flexible, was because fiberglass and steel expand and contract at different rates. 3m has an epoxy bonding adhesive for bonding fiberglass to steel. I believe its # is 8219.
It is a 2 part epoxy. If you use a normal bonding adhesive you run the risk of it cracking and coming off over time.

I used 3m 8115 adhesive to bond a NOS bonding strip to the headlight support and will use it to bond the support to the nose. It's 2 pt epoxy and uses a special caulking gun to apply. The local auto body store has the 3M and loans out the gun.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but what do you guys recommend as far as resin goes to patch rust holes in metal bodies. I need to patch a hole behind the rear wheel of my 81 Chev pickup and would like to use fiberglass. I have the replacement metal panel, but the more I think about cutting out the whole wheel well to tack in a replacement panel, the more I like fiberglass. I've also been told by bodymen that cutting and fitting a new panel just invites more rust because of the new exposed interior surfaces that can't be protected. Any suggestions.

Ralph.
