I want to get some thoughts here. My next major project, after I rest and enjoy the Vette for a few months, will be installing a new rear main seal (and possibly a front one).

Anyhow, since I have to pull the oil pan off to do the rear main, I have a new low profile Milodon pan sitting on the shelf. Do I go back on with the stock pan or put the new Milodon one on? I also have a new oil pump and shaft and know that I will have to measure and get the pump welded to the proper depth. Is this a big deal? I have a friend with a Mig welder.

Should I swap out, or clean up the old pan and put it back on? What are the pro's and con's?

I've got the Milodon 7-quart pan, it looks nice but it's really up to you. I don't have any clearance issues and even though nobody can see it...I know it's there. If you like it use it, can't hurt anything.

Yea, the one I have is a flat-wide bottom 7 quart. I was going to save it till I built another motor for the car. I just cant decide whether or not to put it on this engine or not.

I have the 8 quart jobbie for the big block. They are nice pans, and do look cool if and when anybody looks under.

You do need the correct pick up for that model pan from Milodon to make sure you are getting the correct suck on the oil.

Chris,
Aside from the pickup, that I know will have to be changed, will the stock dip stick work properly? The Milodon pan I have is a 7 quart, but its a low profile job. Or, do I just have to measure it when I get it ready to go on?

Use your stock one. Measure it on a full load of oil, and scribe the new full mark as needed and work from there.

When I purchased the Moroso 6 quart for my BBC, it came with a pick-up and the pick-up bolted to the bottom of the pump. I know you can purchase separately from Moroso several different pick-ups. This allows you to match the type of pick-up to the type of pump you have. There will be no need to weld.

If you decide to use another pick-up, then a good way to weld is using a MIG welder. It is not recommended to solder it using a torch. Too much heat transfer, causing possible distortion.
