Hey All,
I recently bought a 63 vert from one of the guys over on CF....man I love this car. I would like to know if there are any tricks to get the rear view and side mirrors from constantly moving and needing to be readjusted. I don't see any set screws that can be tightened....any ideas?

I have the same problem with my rear view mirror. I didn't have the problem with my original mirror, but when I bought a new/reproduction one, it started to have this problem.

I only bought a new mirror, and am still using the original mount. The manufacturing tolerances must not be the same.

The only way I was able to solve it was to remove the mirror from the mount, insert a very small piece of wax paper between the mount and mirror ball then reinstall the mirror and tighten the screw.

This seemed to keep it fairly tight, but it still slips slightly if I really get on the gas.

I'm sure someone else has a better solution.

for your inside rear view mirror, you need a new bushing, you can source it here (item #08 in Section #10: http://www.licorvette.com/pdfcatalogfiles/cat22/1011.pdf

side mirror, well s.o.l. but others may have solutions . . .
p.s. is that a late or early 63? outside mirror changes over the model year . . .

ctjackster--yep...I bought Brian's maroon 63 vert. It came off the line 6-12-63. It's going to absolutely kill me to have to put this thing away for the winter....
this is such a sweet 63. Thanks for the link...much appreciated.
 
Side mirror

Had a loose side mirror when I bought my 65.... I tightened it up but that didn't last to long. I bought a replacement mirror from Corvette Central and put it on and it hasn't wiggled yet and that was three years ago. I did replace the whole assembly though. ;)

yeah, I hear ya Montana but Danoman might have the original Donnelly mirror on there, can't just go chucking correctly-dated parts without trying to fix em first, now can we? ahh, the fun of these old Vettes . . .
 
Guys....that's an internal problem with the mirror.....usually non accessible parts. Underneath the glass there is a riveted spring that holds the mirror on a small pivot ball......very similar to the clutch fork....just smaller.

If the spring or the rivet loosen....you exactly got that problem.

The only way to solve this is to put the mirror into a closeable tin box with acetone to loosen the glue and get the glass out. It should be at least in for an overnight period.

With the rearview mirror you might run into the problem that the glass is kinda clamped. Then you have to go for a replacement.
 
Drip locktite into the ball area and let it set up then once dry it provides a tighter interference fit so that the mirror doesn't move around as easy.... Dave..
 
all I can say is, as for the interior rear view mirror, there is this little $2.00 bushing . . . . . .

While it may help any movement problem at the bolted area between the interior mirror stem and the mirror mount bolted onto the car, does nothing for the loose play between the mirror and mirror stem in the ball area.

Mikey1, I assume when you speak of removing the mirror glass from the frame assembly on the interior rear view mirror to get at the ball mount that you're only placing the mirror in a closed box with acetone to let the fumes do the work, not submersing the mirror in acetone? Correct? How long does this process take, and is there any damage to the silvering on the mirror? Experience?

I still have my original, wiggly mirror. Didn't toss it away. However, it does all of its wiggling in a box, not on the car.... I sure wish summer hadn't been so short.....
