I work on a bunch of engines, and one thing I noticed about the cars useing that purple oil is that it tends to leave a noticable film that the mobile 1 oil doesn,t, seem too, now IM not sure thats a good or bad thing but its a very noticable film on the surfaces and personally I don,t like the look of it.
now any oil if not changed frequently leaves a film, and I don,t know how often the guys change thier oil and filters, but Ive changed mine useing moble 1 and a bit of marvel mystery oil every 3500-4000 mile and my vette engine appears like new after about 7 years and 60,000 PLUS miles.
again, it may be that the higher cost makes guys leave the stuff in the engines longer than it should be there, but if you pull a valve cover or oil pan on an engine using that oil I think youll see what Ive been refering too.

this might answer a few questions

I would use the Mobil 1 . I my self use KLOTZ. We have used it in all our race motors for over 10 years. I have not had one failure due to lubrication. I worked with GM on the oil and they allowed the use of the KLOTZ as well as Mobil 1 for there racing crate motors. I do not like the Royal Purple either it leaves an odd film and I have seen some bearings that didnt look so good after 1 season. I also had no trouble with the Mobil 1.

I vote Mobil 1. Why change. It works!! Don't you think G.M. would use the purple if it worked as well? It is less expensive look what they would save per year.

thanks guys i was wondering about this stuff. let me ask you this, i use mobil1 and now using 5W-30 can i switch to 10W-30 for summer and can you use an additive with mobil 1? i,m concerned at how hot these motors get. last i am a fanatic when it comes to changing oil. i believe you must get that dirt out of there and cost be damned. i have never had an engine problem or failure and believe its because i change my oil before any manufactors recomendations. if its the boat , harley , vette ,or tractor i keep charts so when i know when everything is due. thanks again for your insights.

Unless your into racing your Mobil ! won't fail you .If you want extra protection just change it more often and use good filters. We have a fleet of hard use pick-ups ,some have 250,000 miles oil changes every 10'000 miles no engine failures in 25 years.

I can give you a perspective from another vehicle - I went from Mobil 1 to Royal purple in my 06 dodge ram 4.7. It idles much more smooth with the R.P., and from the talk on the various dodge truck forums, the 4.7s & 5.7s are very finicky motors (oil, plugs, trans fluid level will make them run like crap).

I don't use Mobil 1 (or any synthetics) anymore in my 85, as they found every crevice possible to leak out of. I now use Castrol High mileage dino, which halted some leaks and also lessened the morning puff.

a lot of these so called "RACING OILS " use a excess pressure additive that causes oxidation that is not a problem in race engines because of the frequent oil changes. this oxidation of the oil may be the film you see.

I think it was Horsepower TV that did a test. They used an LS1 Camaro that had Mobil 1 in it. They changed from Mobil 1 to Royal Purple. They did a dyno with Mobil 1 and then changed to Royal Purple and did a dyno. They changed the Motor oil, diff fluid and I think one other fluid but I can't remember. I do remember the end result was an increase of 8 hp.

However, how much of that increase would've been attributed to fresh fluids or the switch to Royal Purple is beyond me.
