I would really like to find out the realistic/safe potential of these cars. Assume for the sake of discussion this would be a 6spd. I talked to "Ultra Slow" and Sam when they were still on the CF and Matt stated that you can mini-ram (or similar) these cars. With an intake and exh upgrade, up the boost with good gas, upgraded clutch, what ballpark #'s are we looking at? I don't want to make assumptions, so hopefully I can hear from those that have made some nice gains. I am looking for a weekend street turbo toy that is 500-600rwhp capable, depending on boost. I know the internals were upgraded on these cars, so can this be achieved, and can the car live at these levels if only for the occasional blast. If so, maybe I could turn the boost down and run only 400 once in a while :D I'm anxious to hear what you guys are running! Thanks!

Yes, this is what I would want to do. If you could get the hp and tq curves close to "squared up" (ie, loose some low end torque, spin more rpm, make more hp) it would be one bad dude, not that they aren't already. What about the internals though?

I think some AFR heads on a B2k would get some ridiculous results. Unfortunately due to financial and marital plans, I am selling mine.

AFR heads, ASM base & runners, AFPR set to 52psi, 13psi, and 3" dual exhuast would be crazy!! :D My guess would be 650hp.

I'd have to agree with you. I spoke with Ed at ASM last year. He reworked my car back in 1995. I asked what he'd do differently today and he said he'd use AFR 195 heads. I have reworked (ported/polished) stock heads with larger Manley valves. I have the ASM base and large tube runners as well as an extrude honed plenum and 52mm throttle body. Unless you change to a custom grind camshaft about low 500rwhp/high 600rwtq is more likely. I think you might see close to 600/800 with the right cam and proper tuning.

Thanks for the great info guys, it is appreciated! I looked at the ASM site and the prices are not too bad, along w/ the AFR's. Looks like my choice just got a little more difficult :confused Not to keep harping on it, but I have to assume at least some of the internals would need upgrading?? As I said, I realize they were upgraded for these cars, but is there a known threshold under a proper tune/no detonation?

AFRs

if you check the TPIS website, you'll see they designed some heads in conjunction with AFR and AFR build them. Those are the heads Id put on my car.

The weakest link in a stock TT motor is the rods they used. They are forged GM "Pink" rods. Same as the old LT1 motors used in the early 70's. If you want to really make some serious power you would probably want to upgrade them. Not to say that they are weak but more than a few TTs have had the misfortune of grenading the motor with a rod through the block. Mine now has a forged Callies crank and Carrillo rods.

90Callaway, thanks! And many thanks to all you guys. This has given me a very good idea of what I'd be looking at to meet my goals. I'm still considering another turbo car to go with. It's nice to know what options I have on the table though, so I can make an informed decision! Take care :beer

I was just wondering if you bumped the compression up at all when you installed the new rods and crank?

Yes, the compression was upped from the stock 7.5:1 to 8.5:1. Some of the very late 1991 TT cars, the Speedsters and a few that have since been upgraded have the 8.5:1 pistons.
