This photo was taken just before we installed the headliner in my early-1967 coupe.

It looks like 9-7-2. What do you think it means?

WOW, My guess is Sept.2 1967 OR MAYBE Sept.7 2nd one of a run? Or Maybe UMMMMMMMM????? OK IM outta guesses:D

It looks like 9=7-2. Perhaps the person was a moron and didn't realize that 9=7+2;LOL

Was the car originally white? 972 is the exterior paint code for white, but that doesn't explain the dashes, and I'd expect to see the paint code underneath the car on the vertical surface in front of the gas tank.

No, it was originally Silver Pearl #986. It was also a 500 car (build number) which appears on the bulkhead, firewall and inside both doors.

It may be a quality control person's code and shift numbers combination. Even the new one's when going down the line recieve marks/numbers/letters that indicate certain things to the final assembly inspectors.
If you could find somebody that worked on the St Louis line they might be able to decipher it. I'll be seeing Sonny Kilgo in a couple of weeks, I'll try to remember to ask him if he might remember what those number represent.

What is a "500" car?
As the bodies worked their way through the St. Louis Plant, they were assigned a "Build Number" or "Job Number", (I'm uncertain of the correct term) to track them. This was in advance of them being assigned a VIN.

Unlike with VIN's, when the number climbed to 500 (or was it 1,000?), they started numbering over again.

JohnZ will be by with the Biblical version. :D

Most likely random scribbling, probably done at A.O.Smith when the panel was molded; the only open access to that inner surface at St. Louis was when it was in the roof-to-quarters bonding fixture, and even then the inner roof surface was ten feet off the floor. The bonded assembly came out of this fixture and went right to the line, where it was bonded to the underbody.
