hi all

it's been a while but here are some more progress pics on Baby.
My paint guy finally got the car finished being stripped and sanded - except for the door jambs and doors themselves which he will get to next week.
He has gotten a lot of the body fiberglass done and I dropped off a number of trim pieses for him today so he can fit those on and finish up the fiberglass work. Certain trim pieces like the windsheild and rear window trim mouldings weren't previously fitting just perfect and flush like they should have been because of prior work on the body that had been done poorly in the past and areas were sanded down too low and in some places down to almost nothing so he has to build these areas back up.

He also found more "interesting" history on the car. As he was sanding down he discovered almost a full 1/8" of Bondo covering almost the entire front quarter panels on both sides. under the bondo was other fiberglass repairs. turns out the car had had flairs put on it at some point and than later on removed. In the pics you can see the lines where the flairs had been cut in and glassed up. You can't see this on either of the rear quarter panels as both of those had been replaced.

He is going to spend the next two weeks finishing up on the fiberglassing and glueing to strenghen up the bonding lines and than sealing the car.
by the beginning of Feb he will be ready to prime it and get it into color!
:D

We are staying with the original color of Milano Maroon but using BC/CC instead of the lacquer that was on her. His plan is 4 coats of color, wet sanding, 2 more coats of color, more wet sanding, than 2 coats of clear.

We are on track for a completetion date of March 1st.

Thanks for the update, Barry. Man, your guy is really do a thorough job.

Bob

yes he is. Everyone that knows this guy strongly recommended him as the very best. They also all said he was slow (which he is) but seeing all the detail he is doing and not missing any inch of this car I have no doubt the final results are going to be well worth the wait.

Hell, Larry's entire '62 project will probably be almost done by the time just this paint job is, but as long as it's done in time for the spring i'll be happy.

Barry

Hey Barry,

Long time, no post. Glad to see baby getting reborn. Boy, it sure looks different from when I saw her at Carlisle. We gotta get together when she's done and run the two of ours someplace. My 67 goes to Tony's on the 29th for a bunch ($$) of work. I'll catch you in here to get more info later.

Hi Dennis

yeah, I've been slow in posting lately but there wasn't much to show on her progress for a while. I was glad to see the work he had gotten done. He also managed to get another project out of his shop so he should now have even more time to work on Baby.

On your '67, Tony may be expensive but at least you know that is is first rate.

Sounds great on getting the cars together. maybe we can convince Rick to bring Lady out on a cruise also.

Hi Barry,
I was wondering how your progess was coming along. She looks great and I'm sure she'll be good as new soon. Thanks for the pics.

hi studiog

progress is coming alone..slowly, but coming alone.

I have a feeling with all the work my guy is putting into even the smallest details on the body she will end up looking even better than new!
;LOL

i've been watching your project progress lately and it looks great! it must have been a great feeling when you finally got the body back on the frame.
:)

Good to see things are moving along. You knew the job was going to be slow but I suspect you never thought he'd be so thorough though. Nice piece of mind for you that it's done right! Certainly worth waiting for. Please keep the pics coming as it progresses. Cheers

yep, the wait is long but as you said, seeing the work he is doing does give me a great feeling knowing it is being done so well and with such attention to detail.
I just can't wait to see the finished job!
:)

Barry,

get LADY out of bondage from Tony this week sometime! Been tweaking everything such as adjusting valves, changing ALL fluids, checking torque on ALL nuts, bolts, etc., "dumbing down" the door jambs - not sure what I will do next

Barry,

Deja Vu all over again...man you are going through the same identical thing..looks really good, and each time you are getting closer and closer...patience is a big thing with these cars, you guy has the right idea. It's worth the wait... You will do the same thing as I do when baby comes home, I go out to the garage just to look at it....you will do the same...:beer

Keep the updates coming...Collin

I did that checking in on her in the garage thing constantly anywhere since I got her last March until she went back in for the paint in so i KNOW I'll do it again even more once she comes back all finished and is looking even better!
LOL
I'm just afraid she is going to look so good I'll be too scared to take her out anymore and drive her which isn't good as i DID buy her as a driver car.

65 repaint +

Hi! Barry

I have watch the progress on your 65 and it is starting to look awesome! I know what you mean about scared to drive it. Two years ago I took the 65 to its first cruse after body-off restoration. I watch over it like it was a newborn, but a person must have leaned over to look at the engine and a zipper scratch, chilly evening, appeared on the left fender.

Keep the pictures coming,

Ray, you aren't making me feel any better about taking her driving after all this!
;LOL

actually, one of the first places I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want to take Baby to after the new body work and paint job is finished is to a cruise show held every Spring about 20 minutes away from me. I was there last year and the paint on the hood blistered from the sun reflecting off the chrome air cleaner back up onto the underneath of the hood. this blistering is onne of the key reasons Baby ended up in the paint shop to begin with - it started with just fixing that blistered area on the hood and than we decided to just go all out....
Anyway, I was at that show last year and after the paint blistered on the hood I was so upset (i'd only had the car about 2 months at that point) that I left the show early. I found out the next day I had actually won "Best of Show" that day and a 4 foot tall trophy. it would have been my very first trophy to win with Baby but because I left before they gave out the trophies they gave it instead to the runner-up car. I have all intentions of going back this year with my fresh bodywork and paint and winning "my" trophy back!!
I also have a cover for the air cleaner cover now so no more reflection issues to hurt the paint while she is on display with the hood open.

I also plan on not leaving the car alone for even a single instant - I know i'll be too paranoid about someone hurting the car even unintentionally like what happened to yours.

I'll be sleeping in the car with a shotgun.

no need to explain further, we understand perfectly!
LOL

you will probably have armed guards surrounding the car to protect it so nobody can sneak up on it at any angle
;LOL

Warning! Canucks on shifts!;)

Seriously, I can appreciate more now, after seeing how much goes into these cars, why some rope off the area around their cars and sit beside them at any shows they attend. 99% respect the car but all it takes is one and, whether by accident or not, once it's done it's done! Decide before your first show if it's a driver or show car and go from that or you'll give yourself ulcers trying to keep it both perfect looking and enjoy it as a driver too! Enjoy them to the fullest you guys, you certainly deserve it.:upthumbs
Doug

PS: Did you fix those shelves in the garage so you don't have another episode when BABY comes home soon?
