Hi guys, motor wont start. Please help.
I have tried multiple batteries. I am getting spark and fuel. Motor turns over slowly but does not fire up. Motor turns over faster when the plugs are out, obviously. I pulled the battery out of my new truck and still nothing. Every once and awhile it sounds like it may go but then the battery dies out.

Any thoughts.

Thanks
Mike

if you are positive you are getting fuel and spark, then I would check your starter. By removing the plugs you lower the compression considerably.... so that explains why it will turn over faster without the plugs (less resistance against the starter).

I don't know anything about what you have done to your car. But if you had the distributor out, perhaps the distributor is 180 degrees off?

If you've verified you have fuel, spark and correct ign. timing, check if the timing chain has jumped a tooth on the cam sprocket. If that's ok, run a compression test.

I know the starter should be good its brand new. I just checked the timing and I was off a bit. Here's the problem, it just doesn't seem to be spinning freely. I am using a battery, and large battery charger set to START and jumping the starter with a screw driver, I also have a 12volt positive wire to the distributor. Something just isn't right. Shouldn't a battery turn it over like normal car non-stop until I pull the screw driver away? Mine seems to get a bit then stop almost like i'm losing amps, but that just can't be.

Thanks, we backed it off a bit and also tested the battery. The battery is shot, its dropping to 7 volts when we put the load to it. I'm going to pull it outta the pickup and see if it works better.

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!

So all that time and it was just the positive wire going to the starter. It was just too small. I swapped it out for a jumper cable and now it cranks fine, ran for a second then backfired. Is it better to have the timing right on TDC or just after or before ?

Thanks
Mike
